The view from the University of Amsterdam is amazing! It overlooks the beautiful canals, creating such a peaceful and charming atmosphere. Perfect spot to take a walk or just sit and enjoy the surroundings

Similar to NYU, this is a great study-abroad location. I recommend avoiding a full year unless you can handle the cruel winter periods; instead, summer school allows you to explore the country and Europe while taking classes. It is very centrally located with plenty of options for housing and food.

Ik heb nog nooit zo een nare, bureacratische instantie meegemaakt als de Uva. Zelfs de belastingdienst is nog coulanter dan de FDR. Die gasten moeten een prijs winnen voor zulke grote onoverwinnelijke liefde voor vasthouden aan betekenis- en impactloze regeltjes. Meten met twee maten is aan de orde van de dag. Zoals een andere review al zei: ze hebben een enorm communicatieprobleem, leraren die opeens niet komen opdagen, hoorcolleges die last-minute uitvallen maar tegelijkertijd totale onwil (Nee niet onbegrip, simpelweg onwíl) naar studenten toe. Want al deze tekortkomingen vanuit de Uva zijn prima, maar als de leerling zelf een keer een persoonlijk probleem heeft, hoo maar! Zoek het dan maar uit, want we hebben onze onnozele regeltjes!

Housing problems, womp womp. Amazing infrastructure, probably the best in the Netherlands. The gym is supreme. Only sigmas study there.

As a part of travel, I visit the local university in the town I am visiting. Nevertheless this university took my breathe. The structure and facilitates are undoubtedly world class. The only odd thing I realized that the public buses are not frequent at the time I traveled.

Het Amsterdam Science Park ken ik heel goed. Ik heb er een dikke twintig jaar als wetenschapper gewerkt. Je voelt de energie van de plaats, je voelt het potentieel van alle studenten, je voelt dat het - wat het ook is - daar gebeurd. De future of the future las ik vandaag op het nieuwe gebouw 42. 42 is zoals we weten van de Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, het antwoord op alles. Men is dus in voor een geintje. Dat laat ook de vergadertafel (Ruimte B1.25 Science Park 904) waar ik vandaag aan zat zien. Men het een "Jurasic Park" in het midden geplant. Betaald parkeren in de buurt. Er zijn diverse kantines en minstens twee restaurants op de campus. Trein en bus stoppen op de campus.

Best place to study! But don't believe their 'integration/equality of internationals', you won't get a position at the uni as an international, e.g. programme representative even for a programme that is NOT offered at the uni in Dutch, if you don't speak Dutch xdd

This University is closer to a factory than a place of learning. The interior is dull, sterilised and frankly uninspiring.

However, despite these positives, the overall atmosphere—especially the vibe among students and staff—often feels tense and disjointed, which significantly affects the day-to-day university experience. Many students report a lack of community spirit, making it difficult to build connections or feel truly engaged. Administrative processes can be slow and frustrating, and communication between departments sometimes falls short. This leaves students feeling unsupported and disconnected. Social events and extracurricular activities exist but tend to be scattered and don’t quite foster the sense of belonging one might expect. The university’s urban setting, while attractive, also contributes to a constant feeling of rush and pressure, which detracts from a calm academic environment. In addition to these internal challenges, Amsterdam University is not immune to broader political tensions. The Netherlands has seen increased debates around immigration, free speech, and public policy in recent years, and these issues sometimes seep into campus life. Discussions and protests on political topics can be divisive, creating an undercurrent of conflict that impacts the university atmosphere. While political engagement can be healthy for a university community, the way these conflicts manifest here often adds to the fragmented vibe, making it harder for students to focus on academics and build a cohesive community. In conclusion, while Amsterdam University has academic strengths and is located in an inspiring city, the overall environment and political tensions detract from the student experience, resulting in a lower rating.

Facilities are really great, there is everything needed.

The new position of the UVA in Science park is less comfortable than the old building in the center of the city on the Roetersstraat. There was a cinema and student cafes nearby. But the new buildings are perfectly equipped and provide all the conditions for study and scientific research. There are also no parking problems for cars and bicycles.

Wel samenwerken met Chinese universiteiten maar geen Israëlische. Hoe hypocriet kan je zijn! Dat zo’n organisatie buigt voor antisemitisme is zorgwekkend. Wat mij betreft alle subsidies intrekken (net zoals usa).

Why do you offer help for disabled students on your website and emails but when I reached out to the responsible department they just told me to book an online meeting with a student advisor who doesn’t even have any empty slots? This is really stupid and a big waste of time and energy ESPECIALLY for disabled people! Do better!

terrible place. hard to stay it is an educational institution.

Amsterdamse arrogantie, indien zij zelf de HBO-vooropleiding niet verzorgd hebben, word je niet geaccepteerd voor een vervolg masteropleiding. Daarbij wachten ze zolang met beslissen dat er geen tijd meer is op een inschrijving bij een andere universiteit. De reden van afwijzen is vaag en amateuristisch slecht uiteengezet. Vragen worden met standaard teksten beantwoord. Men kan er totaal geen hout van snijden. Dit nu 2 jaar op rij! Jammer, want ze hebben een leuk gevarieerd aanbod, maar dit geeft mij ook geen vertrouwen op goede en professionele studenten begeleiding.

Big disappointment. The education was a massive let down. I got no feedback on my work, nothing to tell me what I did wrong in exams. I emailed professors asking for advise on how to pass and they would just say, study. As if I wasn't spending day and night studying. We were given too many readings, it was impossible to read everything we were assigned. Not even the lecturers, save a few, were motivated and enthusiastic about what they taught. It's really one of those universities that buys into the whole elitist model of education. To pass exams it doesn't matter if you know everything and know how to articulate yourself / argue your point, if it doesn't fit with the mark-scheme then it doesn't count. That is not education. For university level education, these aren't the standards i'm used to. On the plus side, the R campus is modern and pretty, but the other campuses are lacking in comparison. This was for the Political science degree, I hope the other degrees are different.
