Was here for Do Mastane stand up by Devesh Dixit and Abhishek Upmanyu. The jokes were decent not wow like the solo special standups. In other words it was more sort of economical standup comedy 🎤 Cafe seems good.

I’ve spent a decade in Southeast Asia. I’ve seen how cultural centres work there. Not just as venues, but as ecosystems. Programming, audiences, and moderation move together. Momentum is built deliberately. In that context, this space feels timely. Important, even. So I walked into this short film event with my wife. Hopeful. And credit where it’s due. The space is beautifully put together. Thoughtful. Inviting. Clearly built by people who care. The audience was tuned in. All the right ingredients were there. Where the evening struggled was in the films. Several of the works felt giddy and amateur. Technically rough. Narratively unfocused. Distractingly underdeveloped. One film had incoherent audio. Meaning became guesswork, not interpretation. Another leaned hard into abstraction. Not out of necessity. More like a shortcut. It tried, sheepishly, to channel Lynch or Nolan but landed closer to a junky home video. Abstraction isn’t the problem. Effort is effort. Not every film needs to be “Inception”. But abstraction without craft, clarity, or purpose turns into obfuscation. The stories strained for depth instead of arriving at it. The result wasn’t mystery. It was work that felt unfinished and flat. This isn’t the venue’s fault. But programming work of this quality undermines both the space and the audience who has paid money to be there. Then came the Q&A. This is where things felt uncomfortable for me. One filmmaker seemed drunk on his own mythology. Cocky. Dismissive. Actively discouraging questions. He spoke as if the audience owed him their attention. No respect for their presence or participation. A bad attitude. Plain and simple. He talked about not wanting to make the film. About being drunk through the conception and writing process. No self-awareness. No sense that he was poisoning the room. It left a sour taste. Which is a shame. A space this carefully crafted deserves better stewardship of its conversations. Another film’s “representative” wasn’t even a filmmaker. It was a producer. Someone who hadn’t been at the shoot. Didn’t understand the technical process. Couldn’t answer basic questions. Why seat someone like that for a Q&A? The engagement collapsed. Limp. Unsatisfying. I come from filmmaking and television. I expected some juice. Back-and-forth. War stories. Love of the craft. Obsession. Instead, the interactions felt evasive. Hollow. And the films, frankly, had the roughness of poorly made student projects. Which is wild, considering how sharp even simple YouTube and Instagram reels look today. You can’t blame everything on the venue. But curation matters. A lot. Not all events are created equal. Their Instagram shows a genuine celebration of life and creativity. That’s why I’m willing to believe this was a one-off misstep. Still, it was our first experience of the space. There were smaller issues too. The welcome could’ve been warmer. If there’s an event, don’t leave people outside like they’re waiting for a bus. A few extra chairs wouldn’t hurt. No water. No tea. No snacks. An odd hosting choice—though the upcoming café sounds promising. This is a new space. It’s finding its footing. What’s already been built is impressive. The foundation is solid. The trajectory is familiar to me as I’ve watched cultural districts in Osaka, Spain, Taipei, Thailand, Seoul and Singapore flourish during my visits there. Early experimentation. Then sharper programming. Then confidence. That’s the game. I’ll return eventually. This first visit had gaps. But it also showed promise. With tighter curation, stronger moderation and better audience care, this space could become a genuine cultural anchor for the city.

just attended this event for the first time, and I have to say, it was really refreshing. What stood out to me the most was the personal attention everyone got—it didn’t feel like just another big, impersonal gathering. There was this cool “indie” vibe throughout, which really came through in the way people interacted. It felt genuine and relaxed, not forced or overly polished. I hope the organizers keep this vibe alive in future events because it’s what made this one special. Looking forward to more, but fingers crossed they don’t lose that unique, down-to-earth feel! Also, I know you guys need to make money - but slightly more cheaper drinks and food would be an icing on the cake considering it was a bit crampy didn't justify the rates.

Attended a secret line up comedy event which was totally worth the money. Got to see some really hilarious acts with a bunch of diverse folks in a cozy little space curated at 3 Art House. They have the stand up events and snacks to accompany the acts.
