This museum is a gorgeous oasis of calm & beauty amidst the hiatus & bustle of the city outside. Staff are very friendly & helpful, the exhibitions are unique & engaging, the actual building is so lovely that there was a couple taking engagement photos last time I was there. Also the museum hosts really cool events including the Asian Women Are Strong event every international women’s day & various speakers. The gift shop is ADORBS dangerous to my wallet, beautiful things, cute things, range of books & stationary. Asian box cafe inside by a lovely atrium to sit in. A real gem. I usually take the hut & pay to park at civic center across the street- but super accessible via muni or BART as well

A pretty good museum for it's Asian specialties. Good write-ups on the signs. Not crowded. I happily spent 2hrs there and could have done more. It's worth checking out the special exhibits - they are included in the admission.

Excellent efforts to preserve culture across the Asian continent. Happy to see representation for SEA specifically, as we tend to be forgotten. The display linking Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism was very informative. There's also a makerspace for kids by the lobby. Highly recommend!

I came here during a community event for international women’s day and I’m so grateful that this museum exists. Love to see the history from different parts of Asia and the museum is beautiful. Make sure to visit this place when you’re in SF.

Our group of ten in three cars enjoyed a memorable day together at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. The museum visit began with lunch at the cafeteria giving us a chance to get acquainted before our afternoon tour. At 2 pm we had a guided tour of the museum’s world-renowned collection. Our docent helped us to explore the beauty and art from many parts of Asia—sculptures, paintings, ceramics, and sacred objects that span thousands of years. We learned about the creative techniques used by artists of different time periods, and how each works reflects the cultural and religious traditions of its people. The experience opened our eyes to the ways art expresses both faith and human experience. It reminds us that creativity and devotion are deeply connected across cultures and history.

3 stars. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this museum. Been visiting regularly for over a decade and I am a current member. Great ambiance and tons of thoughts and efforts into the exhibits. Incredible onsite staff that cares. Civic Center can get seedy at times, but security does a fantastic job maintaining order without being overly aggressive. What knocked off two stars is the communication (or lack of) and zero accountability. For instance, an author talk on January 25, 2026 was cancelled but there was no prior notice online. The event was simply stripped from the website.... showing 404 not found. What does that mean? The museum could've simply just leave that event on their page and mark it as cancelled and apologize for the inconvenience. Super frustrating since we planned our day around that event. I even tried to call ahead to confirm and wasted a lot of time with automatic prerecorded responses that led nowhere, looping me around. Look, I totally understand that emergencies happen, and events could be pulled last minute, but it's simple curtesy to give patrons notice or a good gesture to reimburse for the inconvenience. Front desk was very sympathetic and acknowledged that they're in the wrong - told me to write an email to the customer experience team. I did and never got a response. The other poor communication incident was the June Pride parade in 2025; the entire Civic Center section was blocked off and we were hoping to visit the museum but didn't receive any notice in advance. I also understand that the pride parade has nothing to do with the museum, but if there's certain closure or traffic obstruction, it would've been nice to get a heads up for these occurrences before guests make their trek out. Nothing on social media or their website. Sure, they have a fine print disclaimer saying that they can be subject to closure with no notice. That's not really helpful and again, shows the lack of accountability. You have social media. Please use it. TLDR: Great museum, terrible communication and be prepared for your events to be cancelled without prior notice.

Such a beautiful museum with unique exhibits from all of Asia. It was nice to see so many ethnicities represented together. I would recommend a visit! We went during a night “rave” and the vibes were great. We even got some souvenirs to remember the occasion.

Buckle in, because I have quite a few things to say about the Asian Art Museum. To keep my thoughts organized, I will start with the positives. The building is wonderful. It is a remodeled and expanded version of the old Main Library and I think they've kept the original architecture in fine condition. I was also surprised by how many interactive areas and live events they were offering at the time of my visit. I saw readings for all ages, arts & crafts for the children, mahjong tables, meet & greets, and book signings, the schedule full until closing. Maybe it was because I visited on a free Sunday, but it really seems like you get more than what you pay for in this category- you don't just get the art, but an *experience* as well. This is outstanding when I think of other museums that offer little else to see outside of their collections. Lastly, the galleries are well organized. They mainly split the rooms by region and era, which make the displays flow easily. Of course, the place is well maintained and modern, and the staff were incredibly helpful when I asked them questions. My favorite part of the museum had to be the contemporary art, which I admit I have a bias for. I loved their most recent installation, Covering Letter by Jitish Kallat, which takes up an entire room. I had actually been waiting to see it before I came! I’m a space nerd, and I loved experiencing the Golden Record and its contents in a new, contemplative way. With all this being said, I was close to giving the Asian Art Museum 3 stars at first. Indeed. One thing that was very apparent to me was the almost incomplete state of the museum when I visited. They had a ticket discount in September while some exhibitions were under construction, but I do not know if it has carried into this month. While I was lucky enough to visit for free, I think it should have. There were a noticeable amount of collection gallery pieces missing from their spots, and entire exhibitions are still in progress or blocked off. It didn’t feel like I was getting a full visit, which was a let down. Second, a lack of diversity in their collection gallery (aka their permanent/historical collection). Listen, perhaps I’m too patriotic, but when I only saw one, maybe two Philippine artifacts at MOST, I was extremely disappointed. I understand they cannot represent every single Asian culture, but when some countries get multiple rooms (such as India and China) and others get a corner, not even that, it feels… unfair, unrepresentative of the full scope of Asia and its art/history, especially when you’re leaving out whole nations. It didn’t make sense to me. There was not only a lack of Filipino representation, but also a lack of Vietnamese, Laotian, Pakistani, even Korean representation, somehow… Why call yourself an Asian Art Museum if you are not really going to represent Asia? Don’t get me started on the insane amount of Buddhist art. I have nothing against that religion and I think the art was masterful, but it was odd how that genre took up, like, 50% of the collection gallery. It got to the point where I had to start skipping some of it. There is room for more variety in my opinion. A few smaller complaints such as one of their escalators not working and their gift shop being overpriced apply, but that is where my biggest problems end. Overall, if the Asian Art Museum improves in these areas, I think it could be a worthy candidate for a “must-visit” title, but I just don’t see it that way right now. It is close, though. Overall, 4/5.

The Asian Art Museum had a variety of art forms, including Indian sandstone sculptures, Chinese paintings on having scrolls, porcelain, stone monuments with carvings, and artifacts, Japanese ceramics and warrior attire, Korean ceramics and porcelain, and Javanese blades. The Chinese, Indian, Himalayan, Japanese, Korean, and Thai exhibits include art from the 1500s, 1200s, 600s, 200s, and 100s.

Do not miss out on this museum! I went during one of the free Sundays and was blown away by how thoughtfully curated the exhibits are and the vast variety of works spanning from ancient times to modern day. The architecture of the building itself is amazing as well. There’s so much to take in that I think I’ll be back for another visit sometime soon!

Wow, what an incredible experience! We didn't plan on visiting this museum when we headed to San Francisco, but we’re so glad we did! The building itself is a work of art. The galleries were absolutely fascinating. Although I’m not an Asian historian and haven’t spent much time studying their ancient history, this visit has definitely sparked my interest. The skill and attention to detail that the ancient Asian craftsmen put into their carving and metalwork is truly amazing! I was genuinely blown away every time we turned a corner to discover another intricate carving or stunning piece of art. If you’re in the San Francisco area, this place is definitely worth a visit!

I was somehow disappointed by this museum, probably because I had so high expectations! The third floor was closed and about half of the second floor had nothing to expose. The Japanese section was interesting but too small, the Korean section was small as well, no Chinese painting or sculpture, as the Chinese section had mostly ceramics and some ivory. I haven’t seen other Asian countries represented or perhaps I missed them unintentionally. The restaurant offers good and tasty food and the shop has interesting objects.

The first Sunday of each month is free entry, what a great deal. The museum’s major attractions are China, Japan and Korea. But they also have sections from India all the way Middle East. I personally liked the more modern arts and exhibits. Such as the modern Japanese arts and the Taiwanese video series. The museum is very large, if you have the time check out the third floor south central arts of Cambodia, Laos and others. If you are tired, stop by the cafeteria, the prices are reasonable and they even offer bubble teas.

A collection of many artworks from various Asian countries including India , Japan , China, Iran, Korea, Himalayas region and many more. The architecture of building itself is not less glamorous than the artworks where it appears to be the City’s main library . Many art lovers have contributed in this museum including Avery Brundage Detroit born athlete and president of international Olympic Committee and Mayor Dianne Feinstein. Paid street parking is available for $2 and hour( Nov 2025)

Wow this place was amazing! I spent two hours but you could easily double that if you have it the proper time. It’s much bigger than it seems, each floor winds around and around, if you’re focused on a particular Asian country don’t skip a floor based on the descriptions, many countries mixed among the floors. Amazing to see artifacts from over 1000 years ago highly recommend.

The Asian Art Museum is beautiful and many parts of the collection are incredible and fascinating. However, the representation of Southwest Asia felt lacking. Art from ancient Iraq and Iran was confined to a small room off to the side, which made it feel marginal rather than central to Asia’s history. Indian art was also missing key works from the Mughal period, leaving that section incomplete. It’s hard to know if this was intentional or the result of implicit bias, but the absence prevents a full picture of these regions. Given how strong the rest of the museum is, I hope they continue to expand and curate art from all parts of Asia more fully.
