I had an exceptional experience at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, thanks to Nurse Faith and Ashley. They went above and beyond to ensure the patient received the best possible care. They’re professionalism, compassion, and dedication truly stood out. The environment was humble yet welcoming, and the level of service was outstanding—definitely a 5-star experience. Thank you, Nurse Faith, for your incredible support.

My mother was admitted to Barnes Jewish Hospital on Dec 2nd on the surgical floor her care there was wonderful. Nursing was great, but when they moved her to 12800 floor oncology, the care was terrible. I thought she was in good hands being i live 3 1/2 hrs away. There was absolutely no personal care at all, 3 days she laid there, no dentures taken out , sores on her gums. No hair brushed no shower. When I got there I thought I was going to have to cut her hair off she has long hair. She hadn't slept in 3 days they said she was a little out of her head , which she was getting chemo treatments and a bag of steroids as a prep each day. I ask if they was giving her anything to help her sleep? One nurse i talked to on my way up said she was prescribed sleep aids but they hadn't been given. I was furious by that point. When I got up there I asked why she hadn't got her medication that was prescribed by the doctor? Nurse responds with " she didn't ask for it" this is a women that is out of her mind due to no sleep for 3 days and you expect her to " ask" for it! I ask her what happened to judgment in nursing. A little comfort measures go a long ways. We had found out she has stage 4 cancer, we had a lot going on and worries i didn't think I had to worry about her care here but obviously I was wrong. I stayed with her and she of course got what she needed when I was there I should not have to make sure everyone does their job and it is sad that it has to be this way. I have a kid at home and a husband that has stage 4 cancer also and I can't leave now because nobody is going to do their job. The first night I stayed they finally gave her her prescribed meds for sleeping she slept like a baby ( imagine that) her nose was so dry from the oxygen, night nurse kept coming in and hollering at her for taking off her oxygen. Come to find out the doctor prescribed the humidifier for her oxygen, it was not giving either until I got there. Ridiculous!!! Again just a few comfort measures to make her a little more comfortable would of been nice.

The nurse and doctors at Big Barnes were awesome. I would especially like to say that Harrison Hagan was the best nurse I have ever had. He was there to do my blood draws and found my robe again after surgery, etc. Kati Bha or Bhu was also very good. The GI Team was excellent as well.

We want to thank the wonderful nurses and doctors on the 10 floor of the icu unit they were so helpful and open about everything going on with my wife they were caring understanding and compassionate. Was a true blessing on keeping us involved with what they thought and didnt leave us wondering. For every happy story there are sad ones as my wife couldn't overcome everything that went on but I never felt alone in what there plans were for my wife. Thank you all even on the surgical ward by the old cafeteria as well 5th floor as well top notch. I may hell would ever want to be there but I sure as hell know if I was I would want it to be there god bless you all. Now it is time for me to grieve just know I think you all are hard working angel with wings 🪽 ❤️ much love from Karen corp savannah corp and of course bringing up the rear yours truly John corp and the whole hoelscher clan

My brother was supposed to have surgery at 730am on Friday. We traveled from Peoria, Il. Was at hospital at 520am. At 1130ish I finally went out to find out was going in. Nurse just said they was having equipment issues in OR. I asked for DR to come talk to us. This was making me nervous. The Dr's "fellow" came down and told us that the instruments needed for the surgery was not sterilized properly and they was having issues getting them sterilized. He stated they have had this issue for past 2 weeks. They were working on it. Ended up canceling my brother's surgery at 230pm. Lack of communication from hospital staff. No one had eaten since night before. Oh and the snow storm we drove through to get him there. This hospital was supposed to be a good one. I have big doubts and not sure we want to have something done there. I have NEVER had this happen in the 40 adult years of my life. I've had many family members and myself have surgery and never had this. Very scary. I sure hope upper management sees what's going and fixes the issue before something bad happens due to their negligence

The surgeon was great. When I got out of icu that's where it all began. There's so much I can say, but I just had open heart in January. Nobody would help me to the bathroom literally had a fall risk bracelet. I'd hit the button and nobody would ever come so I got up myself fell 3xs told them nobody cared. A few times went without pain meds bc again nobody would come or say they were and never did until I got up and went to the door and got somebody. The nurse gave me caffeine after it was said I can't have it, but still did and went back into afib. Was hallucinating bc the pain meds. Told them over and over finally my surgeon came in and dealt with it. Nobody would help me with a shower until the very last day like 10mins before I was too leave and "oh I can give you shower" mind you I was there almost a week and a half. The room was filthy. Never again. I'd rather die. Ptsd is real bc I have had nightmares about that place ever since. They had my allergies messed up and I pretty much ate broth the whole time. It's just ridiculous. I'm going to say this was the worst experience in my life. I felt so alone which I was I had nobody except my nurses. I had 2 good nurses that weren't there all of the time of course. Being treated like an inconvenience is no fun after open heart and when you have no family there and are all alone you look to your nurses, but my nurses might of well have been invisible.

I had Open Heart Surgery here, & let me start by saying this place has AMAZING Doctors working here! Anyone wearing a white coat, was friendly, knowledgeable, & professional at all times. Unfortunately, the infrastructure is failing & you have these talented, brilliant minds trying to save lives in an outdated hospital with what they are given. Yeah, they are making it work but it took a toll not only on me, but some of the staff there. The NURSES?! There were maybe 6 outta the 10 that were good, 1 of them was amazing & I recommended him for an award. But there was a group of nurses on my first night in ICU after surgery that basically became combative with me & started treating me more like a Prisoner than a Patient. The catheter was installed wrong which was plugging up my urethra instead of creating drainage, so I couldn’t urinate no matter how hard I tried or pushed. It was extremely painful & only some would leak all over the bed. My body would absorb the rest making me extremely backed up. Because of this, my temp started rising & I was profusely sweating to where the entire bed was soaking wet! When I pointed this out to the nurse assigned to me? She caught an attitude because she had to clean up the urine & change my catheter to where she started throwing things in the sink & making rude comments to me. When she finally finished? She asked if I needed anything else, so I thanked her for all her help & asked for some Ice Water because I was over heating. She told me no, when I asked why? She claimed it was because I had to much fluid retention in my body. Well, yeah? I couldn’t urinate for the past 20+ hours that’s what happens. So I asked for some ice chips or cubes to chew on to cool down & again, she said no! I’ve never heard of anyone being denied water or Ice. I know what cardiac tamponade is, but this wasn’t the case. This was my first night out of surgery, & I’m begging for water. I was seconds away from pulling the tubes out of my body, & walking out of the hospital. When I asked for a new nurse? A team of nurses charged into my room, & one lady identified herself as the head nurse in charge & started lecturing me about how she’ll change my nurse but it’s not going to change anything because I’m still not allowed to have water or ice, SO DONT ASK FOR IT! When it came time to take my medication? They brought me a half of glass of luke warm water to wash the pills down with. I honestly couldn’t believe I was being treated like this, especially after serving my country in combat. I ended up finally convincing the new nurse to give me ice, which helped cool me down once I was able to expel my liquid waste. After I was transferred from ICU to Recovery I was placed in a shared room that had an AC which wasn’t working, & the air coming out of it? Smelled very moldy, you can actually see the dust & dirt sticking out of the bottom of the unit from not being serviced. I don’t know if the retaliation continued, but the nurses I had down there were HORRIBLE! I had one male nurse who was not gentle at all when injecting my stomach with blood thinners to where I had bruises on me a week after I was discharged. He was also cutting my pain meds in half which were Oxycodone 5mg, & I’m a 260lb man who just had his sternum opened up! 10mg is barely enough to subside the pain for me. And Again with the infrastructure, the plumbing was leaking, you had to flush the toilet in the room 3-4 times just to get toilet paper to go down, & my family couldn’t find parking when they came to get me. There were so many times that I wanted to get up, & walk out of this facility because of the problems I had there. The Doctors are great, the surgeons are amazing but they really need to screen their nurses better & make sure they are treating their patients with the care they deserve. We are not prisoners court ordered by a judge to be there?! We are patients who are paying the hospital a great deal of money for the care, or lack thereof we are being provided. Lastly, the food here is really bad.

This review is in recognition of main information desk concierge, Maria Moore. I was to meet an employee near the information desk however, I eventually discovered that it was the information desk in the area of the Advanced Medicine division- not the main campus entrance. After making eye contact with me, and noticing some of my phone conversation about being lost with the employee was to meet, Maria offered to walk me back the long maze, through the construction detours to the correct location. I was lost and late for my meeting at that point and she went above and beyond to assist me. I hope that she will be recognized for her outstanding customer service initiative. Thank you, Maria!

This is a nice hospital the nurses really. Not the building its the Nurses they put there hearts in to their patience you are never wanting for anything they are on top of it. The Doctors really know what they are doing. And you know you are being taken care of.

I am writing this on behalf of my domestic partner who is Deaf. My partner was in the emergency room hallway with no means of communication. She was not given an ASL interpreter or access to any other communication devices. Hospitals have tablets to access interpreters, as if to do facetime calls. Barnes also now has ASL interpreters ON STAFF. When asking for an interpreter or some mode of communication, even just write, the ER doctor waved his hands as if to say, I don't have time for this and continue talking about her health condition which she could not hear. She waited 24hours in the emergency hallway to be admitted. Once admitted she was greeted by the same poor service. No, communication other than when I (a hearing person) was around as if they were trying to put on some sort of show for me. She was in there for about a week and only got meals delivered if I was there to order it. Most days, she only had dinner when I visted and ordered for her since you have to call to the cafeteria to have food delivered to your room. Deaf people cannot hear on a phone. Daily requests for help ordering food was repeatedly ignored, not once did any staff member assist ordering food. The poor excuse for a "doctor" came in the room while I was there. She did say that she should see two different specialists but would not be involving the two specialists that needed to be consulted, because she said that those two doctors were too busy to see her. She admitted she was basically a general practitioner and her two ailments we're not to per specialty and didn't have enough knowledge on either condition. This poor excuse of a "doctor" and human being had the nerve to say that she would one day like to learn american sign language, because it looks like something easy to learn, and it would look good on her resume. She did have an interpreter came in a couple times only because he is a friend and he did it between other clients. While she was in the hospital room alone staff and "doctor" made no attempt to communicate with their Deaf patient despite the fact that I left pen and paper at the hospital from the first day on. Even when they were handed the pen and paper, they set it aside and continued talking. Their Deaf patient would type on her own phone and hand it to them in hopes that they would type back. They would answer her by talking. Let me remind you that hospitals are required to provide so motive, communication access and now all have tablets to access interpreters, as if to do a facetime call and Barnes Jewish has sign language interpreters ON STAFF. After multiple complaints and reminders from myself and from my girlfriend and from her friend reminding the staff and doctors that she is Deaf and that she needs them to accommodate communicate with her, no one did. My girlfriend filed grievances in the hospital. I made multiple calls to multiple offices and departments throughout the hospital to find somebody to help with the lack of communication and the disgusting behavior of the "doctor". After several calls back and forth between myself and different departments throughout the hospital, they said that they were going to start an investigation. This investigation took almost a month for them to do. When they were done with their findings, they said they found no wrongdoing of their staff and "doctor". I do hope that when any of these hospital staff, "doctor", office personnel and those in higher up positions, themselves have to spend time in a hospital or their loved one spends time in a hospital, I pray that they get the same poor service, lack of care, zero empathy and no communication that my girlfriend received. Maybe then we'll any of these people who are supposed to be there for us in our time of need will understand. But nothing will change until the hospitals stop covering and brushing under the rug their wrongdoings. The staff "doctor" and most importantly the hospitals higher up positions in offices needs to take responsibility and accountability their discriminatory behaviors.

I been liking Barnes since my daughter started going there for her sickle cell it’s been a couple yrs now but to some up the story my mother was transported over to Barnes from Alton Illinois the mostly wrong nurses and doctors were wonderful. Get upstairs to 7075 and there it went downhill. The nurses don’t do anything. A nurse named Kaitlyn is so disrespectful if I could’ve reached through that phone yall just don’t know she told me she don’t wanna talk to me because I asked her when things go wrong with my mother. Could I get an update when I’m not there? She tried to treat my mom poorly & treated the neighbors with all respect color always play a part in situations these lazy nurses get these degrees & come to work & don’t want to do anything even a two nurses from the same floor said she has a smart mouth & is very lazy I will be taking this action farther because mistreating a 67 year old elderly is insane to me my mom told her I was her POA & I needed to be updated on everything that goes on then she handle my mom roughly & she has a broken hip all I know is Kaitlyn count your days because my mom had me on the phone & you didn’t know it & treated her poorly I have the proof she’s a sick nurse please beware of that nurse this is so sad

While the nurses on floor 6 are mostly pretty great, the rooms are absolutely filthy. The housekeeping staff in charge of this area should be fired. Old does not have to mean filthy. When I complained about this, the nursing supervisors made several attempts to get housekeeping to clean the room, and they were repeatedly ignored. My mother is two days post surgical, and I honestly feel that a public bathroom is a cleaner environment than the room she is in. Also, their rules about staying bedside with your family member are antiquated. There is no reason a non-disruptive person should not be able to stay and watch over their loved one. They will not make any exceptions. It is ridiculous and stressful for everyone involved.

Had an 8:30 am with a cardiologist vascular specialist CHRISTOPHER SPEIDEL. I went the day before because im 5 hours away & I wanted to be on time and not drive at 1am. I get to my appointment and checked in 15 early. Im this first appointment of the day. Im waiting 45 minutes and hear a man & women joking, laughing, talking about vacations and other personal trash that should not be allowed in a work place. It turns out that was the Dr to see me, CHRISTOPHER SPEIDEL walks in 30 minutes late & when he was done chatting with the young pretty nurse, doesn't introduce himself, doesn't have a file in hand, hasn't read all the notes about me, my care, my meds. Ect that the nurse took earlier and sets down and asks me why im there. ( IF HE WOULD'VE READ THE NOTES, HE WOULD BE INFORMED). So I told him. He not once makes eye contact with me. Im allowed by laws & regulations a 25 minute new patient appointment. He was in my room less then 10. Didn't exam me, didn't refill my heart medicine, told me to take a BP diary and come back in a week. I told him I have an 18 month diary on Mr & I drove 5 hours to see him & spent $200 on a hotel i couldn't afford to be there on time. He put the ink pen he had been occupying himself with in his shirt pocket, got up, walked out & said "see you in a week". TOTAL ABUSE OF MY INSURANCE, TOTAL ABUSE OF ME, A PATIEBT, HIS JOB. I WAS FURIOUS AND SICK TO MY STOMACH TO HAVE GONE SO FAR TO GET WHAT I THOUGHT WAS GOOD HELP BECAUSE THERES NO HELP FOR ME WHERE I LIVE, TO BE TREATED LIKE TRASH BY HIM AT A WELL KNOW HOSPITAL. DONT RECOMMEND ANYONE THERE AFTER THAT.

Many of the students and the nurses used MyChart/EPIC to enter personal opinions, falsify documentation and misquote me. There are “diagnoses” without any tests, and diagnosis with no tests to back up their misdiagnosis, quotes that I never said, opinions about my character that are untrue. I don’t recommend this facility based on my cancer treatment. Many of my ailments were not diagnosed or treated, false statements led to misdiagnosis and mistreatment. This is a very unprofessional and abusive facility. There’s no accountability until you hire an attorney. I moved out of the state to get the cancer treatment and the side effects from chemotherapy addressed. My doctors were more interested in trying to force me into admitting that I was some kind of drug addict (never in my life) than actually treating my cancer. This all began when my ex found a needle from the emergency department in my cot and reported it to the Head Nurse. I went through three years of hell because of the negligence of this facility.

I have to agree with majority of people's reaction to recent inpatient treatment at this hospital. Right now, I would give BJC a zero. And I wasn't even the patient! I will have to come back and update this. It has been going on since Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve!!! And it just keeps going like a bad horror movie.

I pretty much lived in the ICU for a week while my father was in there. There doctors were pretty great overall, though it's very difficult to get many answers Friday through Sunday. That being said, the nursing staff was incredible. They were always friendly and respectful, and compassionate to our situation. They went above and beyond for us. The cafeteria is pretty good as well, and there's plenty of free coffee around if you need it. A big thank you to all the staff, including the front desk security folks!

Claim they are top 10 in the country. They must rank themselves. My mother was on the 9th floor. Her first two nurses were great. The rest horrible. We had to drive 2 hours a day to make sure my mother could eat. They just drop the tray and leave. Food service horrible, housekeeping horrible. Very dirty rooms sticky floors. No paper towels in bathrooms. I could go on and on but this place is junk

This hospital was ok. My boyfriend was admitted and he stayed for a total of 4 days. When I first got there to visit him, they told me the location of his room and when I got there he was gone and none of the nurses knew where he was. I waited for about 45 minutes until a nurse could tell me where his room was. I wanted to stay with my boyfriend through the night as it was already late when I arrived I was told that I could stay in the family waiting room but not in my husband's room. All the lights were on the staff was very loud as this waiting room was an open room with a small hallway that let out to the main desk. And there was only chaos to sleep im with no reclining option. I did not get any sleep. When I was finally was told by one of the nurses that I could go back in his waiting room, when I arrived in there and sat and laid next to him in his hospital bed, he different nurse came in and said that I was not allowed to be in there even though when I asked another nurse they said that it would be fine to be in there. That happened 2 more times after that throughout the night. I was very annoyed and frustrated to say the least.

Is making people wait 5+++++ hours in the EMERGENCY ROOM really helping people get better? I’ve been sitting in this waiting area for 10hrs getting worse every second. IT’S AN EMERGENCY.
