I had Open Heart Surgery here, & let me start by saying this place has AMAZING Doctors working here! Anyone wearing a white coat, was friendly, knowledgeable, & professional at all times. Unfortunately, the infrastructure is failing & you have these talented, brilliant minds trying to save lives in an outdated hospital with what they are given. Yeah, they are making it work but it took a toll not only on me, but some of the staff there.
The NURSES?! There were maybe 6 outta the 10 that were good, 1 of them was amazing & I recommended him for an award. But there was a group of nurses on my first night in ICU after surgery that basically became combative with me & started treating me more like a Prisoner than a Patient. The catheter was installed wrong which was plugging up my urethra instead of creating drainage, so I couldn’t urinate no matter how hard I tried or pushed. It was extremely painful & only some would leak all over the bed. My body would absorb the rest making me extremely backed up. Because of this, my temp started rising & I was profusely sweating to where the entire bed was soaking wet! When I pointed this out to the nurse assigned to me? She caught an attitude because she had to clean up the urine & change my catheter to where she started throwing things in the sink & making rude comments to me. When she finally finished? She asked if I needed anything else, so I thanked her for all her help & asked for some Ice Water because I was over heating. She told me no, when I asked why? She claimed it was because I had to much fluid retention in my body. Well, yeah? I couldn’t urinate for the past 20+ hours that’s what happens. So I asked for some ice chips or cubes to chew on to cool down & again, she said no! I’ve never heard of anyone being denied water or Ice. I know what cardiac tamponade is, but this wasn’t the case.
This was my first night out of surgery, & I’m begging for water. I was seconds away from pulling the tubes out of my body, & walking out of the hospital. When I asked for a new nurse? A team of nurses charged into my room, & one lady identified herself as the head nurse in charge & started lecturing me about how she’ll change my nurse but it’s not going to change anything because I’m still not allowed to have water or ice, SO DONT ASK FOR IT! When it came time to take my medication? They brought me a half of glass of luke warm water to wash the pills down with. I honestly couldn’t believe I was being treated like this, especially after serving my country in combat. I ended up finally convincing the new nurse to give me ice, which helped cool me down once I was able to expel my liquid waste.
After I was transferred from ICU to Recovery I was placed in a shared room that had an AC which wasn’t working, & the air coming out of it? Smelled very moldy, you can actually see the dust & dirt sticking out of the bottom of the unit from not being serviced. I don’t know if the retaliation continued, but the nurses I had down there were HORRIBLE! I had one male nurse who was not gentle at all when injecting my stomach with blood thinners to where I had bruises on me a week after I was discharged. He was also cutting my pain meds in half which were Oxycodone 5mg, & I’m a 260lb man who just had his sternum opened up! 10mg is barely enough to subside the pain for me. And Again with the infrastructure, the plumbing was leaking, you had to flush the toilet in the room 3-4 times just to get toilet paper to go down, & my family couldn’t find parking when they came to get me.
There were so many times that I wanted to get up, & walk out of this facility because of the problems I had there. The Doctors are great, the surgeons are amazing but they really need to screen their nurses better & make sure they are treating their patients with the care they deserve. We are not prisoners court ordered by a judge to be there?! We are patients who are paying the hospital a great deal of money for the care, or lack thereof we are being provided. Lastly, the food here is really bad.
