We had the opportunity to visit Cheraman Juma Masjid, located in Kodungallur, Kerala Its one of the oldest mosques in India, with its history dating back to 629 CE, believed to have been built by Malik Ibn Dinar, a companion of Prophet Muhammad, and is a blend of Kerala and Islamic architectural styles. The mosque has undergone several renovations and restorations, with the most recent one being part of the Muziris Heritage Project. The mosque's serene atmosphere, unique architecture, and historical significance is excellent. The mosque features a traditional Kerala-style prayer hall with a sloping tiled roof and wooden carvings, alongside a modern underground prayer hall. One of the notable attractions is an ancient oil lamp that is believed to have been burning continuously for centuries. The mosque is open to visitors of all faiths, with a modest dress code and photography etiquette in place. We enjoyed the time spent in this mosque. Worth to visit once in a lifetime as this is the first mosque built in India. Note : King Cheraman saw the moon splitting during Prophet era. Went to meet him in Makkah , reverted to Islam. While returning passed away in Oman.

India’s oldest and first mosque built by Malik bin Dinar raz sahabi at 629 CE at Kodangallur on west coast of Kerala near Kochi. Small but very beautiful and unique architecture of old mosque. Expansion is done with a large underground prayer hall which can accommodate nearly 2000-2500 people which opens for Friday prayer. Beside old mosque there is grave of Malik bin dinar raz. Entry is restricted for ladies in male prayer area however there is separate area for ladies with separate ladies toilets and wazu facilities. Pond is there behind the mosque.

Indias and worlds first masjid built in 629AD. It is widely regarded as the first mosque built in India and one of the oldest in the world outside the Arabian Peninsula. Unlike typical mosques with domes and minarets, it was originally built in the traditional Kerala style (resembling a Hindu temple or ancestral house) with a sloping tiled roof and wooden interiors. A brass oil lamp inside is believed to have been burning continuously for over a thousand years, with devotees of all faiths contributing oil.

The Cheraman Juma Masjid, located in Kodungallur, Kerala, holds the prestigious distinction of being the first mosque in India, constructed in 629 CE. According to historical tradition, it was built by Malik Ibn Dinar on the instructions of the Chera King, Cheraman Perumal, who traveled to Arabia after witnessing a celestial event and embracing Islam. What makes this mosque truly unique is its traditional Kerala-style architecture; for centuries, it eschewed the typical domes and minarets of the Middle East in favor of sloping tiled roofs, intricate woodwork, and a brass oil lamp that has been kept lit for over a thousand years—a practice reminiscent of local temple traditions. As a cornerstone of the Muziris Heritage Project, the mosque recently underwent a meticulous restoration to remove modern concrete additions, returning it to its original 7th-century aesthetic while adding a massive underground prayer hall to accommodate modern crowds. Today, it stands not just as a religious site, but as a profound symbol of communal harmony, where people of all faiths participate in rituals and celebrate the deep-rooted maritime history of the Malabar Coast.

Cheraman Juma Masjid looks different from my earlier visit—new constructions have been added, and the surrounding area feels a bit congested. Parking is available behind the mosque, which helps. The atmosphere inside is very calm, and the historic old mosque section is well preserved and respected. There is a large pond near the mosque, and clean toilet facilities are also available. It can get crowded on weekends, but still remains a peaceful and spiritually comforting place. You can also buy the coconut oil available there, which many people believe has healing properties and is traditionally used by visitors. Overall, a serene and culturally rich place to visit.

The Cheraman Juma Masjid in Kodungallur, Kerala (historically known as Muziris) is a truly remarkable and spiritual place — often regarded as the first mosque in the Indian subcontinent. It carries an incredible history, dating back to the early years of Islam. According to historical accounts, after embracing Islam, Cheraman Perumal, the then King of Kerala, traveled to meet Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Sadly, he passed away in Oman while returning home. However, his nephew and accompanying companions returned to Kerala and established this mosque on the shores of the Arabian Sea. The mosque was recently renovated by the Kerala Government, beautifully blending its ancient legacy with modern amenities. The renovation was thoughtfully done by referring to rare old photographs, preserving the traditional Kerala architectural style — with sloping tiled roofs and wooden carvings — while introducing modern facilities. Below the historic structure, there is now a newly built underground, fully air-conditioned prayer hall with a capacity to accommodate around 1000 worshippers. Despite this modern addition, the charm and sanctity of the old mosque have been carefully maintained above ground. The structure above remains simple, serene, and deeply rooted in Kerala’s traditional design. Tourists and history enthusiasts are welcome inside the campus, where you can walk around, admire the beautiful craftsmanship, and feel the weight of centuries of history. It's a surreal experience for anyone interested in cultural heritage, religious history, or architecture. ⚠️Important Note:As per the mosque committee's current rules, women are not permitted inside the prayer area. Overall, Cheraman Juma Masjid is not just a religious site but a profound historical landmark — a must-visit for anyone exploring Kerala’s deep and diverse cultural history!
