The current second floor of the innovation centre is that area which first brings me relief, then excitement and then hope concerning the physical resources that MAHE provides to its Human Resources (students, staff) to utilize. I got to be part of the Apple developer's program, the lab of which is in the second floor. Oh, the iMacs! With the CIO in my first year, I had the best experience of discussing ideas and I was surprised to find that the CIO let me utilize the Apple lab through a course which I requested and made a case of, to take in audit in my second year itself! Even though I could not complete that add-on course in my third semester of BTech, my experience in the then Innovation Centre was fantastic because of the Apple audit course and lab and the way I was treated.
Here, there is also a Maker's space and a Wood design space (or so is called). But it is absolutely frustrating when these spaces are reserved only for selected students coming either via a student project or through a professor/department's referral. I could never utilize these facilites for my genuine interest in engineering which happened to not have been academic. I just wanted to create some simple wood projects, learn how to use the tools. I had no interest in joining a Student Project here in MIT Manipal. And there is no Professor/faculty who would give me a referral just for my own curiosity of making a small, self-oriented project unless it is inclined to academic research/innovation; which on the faculty’s behalf would stand valid. But what about my sense and skill development in creativity and innovation?
Since the Innovation centre also is in the MIT Manipal campus, I do find a resemblance of such engineering-potential-limiting-policies with MAHE's engineering institution in Manipal. MIT Manipal has the potential (it is possible) of coming to top 25 NIRF ranking in my belief, provided that along with the physical resources that are currently provided, all the human resources (present and potential) are also managed and dealt with fairly. And so is my opinion even for the Innovation Centre, where all members of the community (students, staff) should have equitable access to resources.
I so hope that perhaps in my future projects, if I wish to utilize the resources of Innovation Centre, I get to work with an open-minded, humble administrative staff who is ready to work with the idea instead of judging its creator. With that, hoping that in the meantime, maybe a potential big (/small) entrepreneur and an innovative engineer gets to live the idea of an innovation centre fair-and-square in this futuristic looking glass building.
Reach for the 5 stars MAHE Innovation Centre!
