A major terminal in central Chennai known for handling many long distance express trains, especially towards southern Tamil Nadu. The station has a heritage style façade with a spacious concourse, multiple platforms and clear digital boards that help passengers navigate easily. It is generally cleaner and more organized compared to many busy city terminals. Well connected by suburban trains, metro at nearby Egmore and multiple MTC bus routes, making city access convenient. Waiting halls, retiring rooms, food stalls, cloak room and prepaid auto counters are available. Peak hours and night departures bring heavy crowds, so early arrival is advisable. Pros: Major express train hub.Good city connectivity.Clean and organized.Multiple passenger facilities. Cons: Heavy crowd during peak hours.Parking space is limited.Porter rush near train timings.

This is one of the most famous railway stations in Chennai. Anyone traveling to South Tamil Nadu by train will usually have to come here. There are waiting rooms available at a cost of ₹35 per hour, and a few waiting halls that are decent. The train charts, departure times, and platform details are clearly displayed, which makes navigation easy. Overall, it’s a good and convenient place. However, cleanliness is not well maintained — it’s somewhat okay, but could definitely be improved.

I have been to Egmore for quiet a lot of times but this time I really had bad experience in getting drinking water. There was no irctc water refill station in the platforms. And I had to walk to end of the platform for the drinking water tap which dispensed very poor salty water.

An iconic place built during British rule built between 1906-08. This is a gothic structure building. Maintains it's own charm till date though many additions to the old existing building have been made. Connects most of the south Tamil Nadu locations.

required more toilets as per the large population and traffic.(chargeable facilities are available at 35-50Rs per head per hour for guest room) i prefer free. The environment is rainy but there are proper arrangements. A lift is also available. easy to find . don't spend more than 30Rs in rikshaw otherwise it's just a 1.5km walking distance from CTR MAS RAILWAY STATION. HAPPY JOURNEY 🚅* SAFE JOURNEY

It is now undergoing major renovation in main platform 4 (earlier 1) due to which no display board is working. There is no escalator lift for passengers. One has to go to enquiry and climb stairs to the platforms. Only platform 1 to 3 need no staircase. The rear side is also undergoing major revamp with round about access to metro station.

Chennai Egmore, (formerly known as, Madras Egmore) is a railway station in Chennai, India, situated in the neighborhood of Egmore. The station was built in between 1906 - 1908 as the Terminus of the South Indian Railway company. This is of Gothic style, is one of the prominent land marks of Chennai. The main entrance to the station is situated on Gandhi Irwin Road. It is neat and clean, with all facilities. South Indian food is very tasty. It is usually rushed and has good parking facility. Chennai, the place, where all people will come to visit, one of the world's most best city,

Wonderful station it is. Among all of the stations I've been to, this one tops the list. Lots of amenities available for the passengers. No one will get confused about where to go and where everything is located, as sign boards are arranged at every required place. Train frequency is high. Anyone can go to any place from this place. I like the cleanliness here very much. I can spend all day long here just by sitting on some bench and doing nothing.

Egmore Railway Station is a historic and iconic starting point for an enjoyable rail journey. It’s a place everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. Both local and long-distance trains operate from the same station, making it very convenient for travelers. The only drawback is the limited parking space nearby, so you may need to walk a short distance. However, the station is neat and clean, and there are plenty of food stalls in front — offering fresh meals, snacks, and fruits at all times.

🚉 Chennai Egmore Railway Station – Historic Charm Meets Modern Connectivity Chennai Egmore is a key railway hub in Tamil Nadu, connecting Chennai to southern districts and neighboring states. Built between 1906–1908 in Gothic style, the station retains its colonial-era charm while serving thousands of passengers daily. ✅ Highlights: Connectivity: Trains to Kanyakumari, Tenkasi, Alappuzha, Pondicherry, and even New Delhi and Howrah. Local suburban trains run from Beach Station to Chengalpattu (5 AM–11 PM), ideal for students and office-goers. Facilities: Escalators, lifts, battery-operated buggies (though overcharged at times), and metro connectivity right beside the station. Architecture: A beautiful heritage structure with modern additions, still retaining its iconic look. Guest Rooms & Lounges: Available at ₹35–₹50/hour, though more free and accessible restrooms are needed. Safety & Cleanliness: Generally safe with RPF presence. Trains are cleaned post-arrival, but coach maintenance can be improved. ⚠️ Areas for Improvement: Signage Issues: Poor visibility of platform and coach position boards. Many signs are printed on A4 paper and hard to spot. Overcrowding: Especially during festivals, the station becomes very crowded. Toilet Access: Not enough restrooms for the volume of passengers; long queues are common. Buggy Service Misuse: Senior citizens often struggle to access buggies due to misuse by younger passengers. Roof Coverage: Limited shelter on platforms makes it difficult during rain. 📝 Tips for Travelers: Arrive at least 30 minutes early if you're unfamiliar with the station. Avoid paying more than ₹30 for a rickshaw from Chennai Central (just 1.5 km away). Bring your own essentials like towels and soap if using lounge or guest room facilities. ⭐ Overall Rating: 4/5 A historically significant and well-connected station that continues to evolve. With better signage, restroom facilities, and crowd management, it could offer an even smoother travel experience.

I recently traveled through Chennai Egmore, and overall, it was a disappointing experience. The station is quite old and outdated, and the facilities are not well-maintained. The bathrooms were particularly bad, with broken fixtures and dirty floors. The signage at the station is confusing, and it can be difficult to navigate around the station, especially if you're not familiar with the area. Additionally, there are often long queues at the ticket counters, which can be frustrating if you're in a hurry. One positive aspect of Chennai Egmore is the availability of food and drink options. There are several vendors and restaurants within the station, offering a variety of options to suit different tastes. Overall, I would say that Chennai Egmore is an average station at best. While the food options are good, the outdated facilities and confusing layout make it a less than ideal experience for travelers. The station could benefit from more maintenance and upgrades to improve the overall customer experience.

The buggy cars provided for reach of aged passengers, charge Rs.50 against Rs.10/- displayed in the car itself. On 23rd Dec to move from PF-1 to PF-7,(to board chozhan express) I paid Rs.150 for 3 senior citizens of our family. Moreso it's sad to note that youngsters forceably occupies the car when senior & super senior citizens wait for it.
