Visited this holy and blessed Shrine on a weekday in the month of December. Its a very peaceful and a calm place for prayer. You feel a sense of peace and calmness inside this church. Was a blessing indeed to go to this Shrine of our Lady. Beautifully decorated inside for the season Only had a few worshippers on that day. If your travelling to Matara a must visit church 🙏🙏

I have been to this place a few times even though I am a Buddhist. Very calm place. That’s a remarkable sacred church in Matara. There is a Tsunami memorial statue marked with the water level.

It’s dedicated to the Virgin Mary and attracts thousands of devotees and visitors every year, both locally and internationally. Tradition holds that fishermen off the coast near Weligama found the statue inside a wooden crate washed ashore, and it was given to the parish in Matara.The shrine’s annual feast is celebrated in early September

A very beautiful church in Matara. It is also a very sacred place. The church was completely destroyed by the tsunami of 2004 and now stands the newly renovated church. A very blessed place. The church recorded the height of the tsunami waves. There is also a commemorative monument in his memory. Located right next to the main road.

Locals credit it with helping the community through a cholera epidemic and attribute its survival of the 2004 tsunami to the Virgin Mary's intercession. Solemnity Reverence and Peacefulness!! My wife and I visited the "Shrine of our Lady of Matara" Roman Catholic church in the morning on Friday 21st February 2020. Located on Beach Road, facing the blue waters of the sea, it was peaceful being in this small church, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The devotees visit this church to worship the statue of the virgin Mary and the Child. This statue sitting at the head of the church is said to be miraculous, surviving almost unscathed on several occasions including from the deadly Tsunami that swept through the church in December 2004. There is a larger than life size replica of "Pietta" - Virgin Mary with the child - outside in the backyard garden. One can purchase souvenirs, religious books, statues etc in the little souvenir shop. The garden, though small was pleasant to walk around. Though I am not a Christian, I felt a sense of reverence and peacefulness when inside the church. It was calm quiet and solemn.

I had a very peaceful and spiritual experience visiting The Shrine of Our Lady of Matara. The shrine is beautifully maintained and has a calm and prayerful atmosphere that helps you feel close to God. It is a very special place for Catholics and pilgrims, and the history of the shrine makes the visit even more meaningful. Holy Mass is held regularly, with Sunday Mass at 8:00 AM, weekday Mass at 6:15 AM, and Saturday Mass at 7:00 AM, making it easy for pilgrims to attend and spend time in prayer.  The surroundings are peaceful and well organized, and the devotion of the people who come here is truly inspiring. It is definitely a beautiful place for prayer, reflection, and blessings when visiting Matara. මට මාතර අපගේ මෑණියන්ගේ දේවස්ථානය වෙත ගිය අවස්ථාවේ ඉතා සන්සුන් හා ආත්මික අත්දැකීමක් ලැබුණා. මෙම ස්ථානය ඉතා හොඳින් නඩත්තු කර තිබෙන අතර, සන්සුන් හා යාච්ඤා කිරීමට සුදුසු පරිසරයක් තිබෙනවා. කතෝලිකයන්ට සහ යාච්ඤාව සඳහා පැමිණෙන සැමට මෙය ඉතා විශේෂ ස්ථානයක්. මෙහි ඉරිදා දිනයේ පෙ.ව. 8.00ට, සති දිනවල පෙ.ව. 6.15ට, සහ සෙනසුරාදා පෙ.ව. 7.00ට දිව්‍ය පූජාව පැවැත්වෙන නිසා භක්තිමත් ජනතාවට පහසුවෙන් සහභාගී විය හැකිය. පරිසරය ඉතා සන්සුන් වන අතර මාතරට යන විට යාච්ඤා කර ආශීර්වාද ලබා ගැනීමට පැමිණිය යුතු සුන්දර ස්ථානයක්.

Shrine of Our Lady of Matara is devoted to the Virgin Mary. It is well famous for the miraculous statue of Our Lady holding the infant Jesus. This statue has been lost and recovered more than once, most recently during the 2004 Tsunami. The church is located on beach road facing the beach. The Church premises is not that big but still pleasant to walk around. Church has a small souvenir shop, where you can buy souvenirs, religious books, rosaries, statues, etc. It's a very calm and relaxing place. You're feel so blessed.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Matara is a peaceful Catholic pilgrimage place in southern Sri Lanka. Many pilgrims traveling towards the Calvary Shrine Hiniduma stop here for prayer and reflection. The calm atmosphere of the church makes it a meaningful place for spiritual rest, especially during the season around Easter.

Devine mercy. One of the oldest and a beautiful shrine in Sri Lanka. It just opposite to Matara main beach. Just few walks away from the town. Atmosphere is Devine. Love the holy mass. Refer attached image for mass timing. Holy water collect from back side of the shrine. Highly recommended place if your around Matara.

I attend the annual feast at this shrine annually with my family. In 2025,the feast fell on the 13/14 weekend.

This church currently renewed after the Tsunami disaster in 2004-12-26, one wall with the cross of the Jesus Christ is left without renewal as a memorial of the Tsunami... lovely and a great church with the view of sea... I went several times and felt so peaceful there...

Though the statue's origins are unknown, church officials claim that it is 400 years old. The statue has been damaged, lost and recovered more than once, most recently during the 2004 tsunami in Asia, which damaged the shrine and killed 24 people attending Sunday Mass. The church celebrated its centenary year in 2007. In my own experience I can pray freely in here and also the mind feels very peaceful.
