Akkanna Madanna Caves in Vijayawada are historic rock-cut temples carved in the 17th century during the reign of Qutb Shahi Sultan Abdullah Qutb Shah. Built by brothers Akkanna and Madanna, who were prime ministers, these caves reflect fine craftsmanship and devotion to Lord Shiva. Located near the Krishna River, the site showcases architectural skill and stands as a symbol of their contribution to culture and administration.

Nice rock cave but not well maintained by the temple trust. This cave is nearest to Sri Kanaka Durga Temple, Vijaywada. If temple trust maintain the cave it will look better. No peoples are allowed inside this cave due to non maintenance. This cave has been design itself and looks beautiful. All the pilgrims who visit Sri Kanaka Durga temple, they also want to visit the rock cave but the entry gate are closed. Daily buses and Auto are available to this cave from Vijayawada Bus stand and railway station.

These caves are preserved caves so entry is not allowed you can only view them from outside. And the exact location is just behind the kanakdurga temple.

The cave has a long important inscription on the free standing pillar to the south. It helps date this and many other cave temples found along the Krishna river valley, because all of them contain the phrase "Sri Utpati Pidugu".

These caves are just below the Kanaka Durga temple and are unfinished. Only Vinayagar’s bas-relief can be seen.

Akkanna Madanna caves are a group of rock cut Hindu cave temples near Durga temple Vijaywada. Dated to mid 7th-century and dedicated to Shiva, they were excavated by the Eastern Chalukya dynasty. They consist of the upper (larger) and lower caves. The upper cave is better preserved, and has an important 7th-century inscription. To the immediate north of the lower caves is a small park with inscribed pillars and recovered ruins of lost Hindu temples. It's a small spot and known for the hanging pillar. It comes under ASI and nice tourist destinations. People usually come here for temples nearby and public and private transport services are available.

You could be forgiven for missing this place since its gates are kept closed. It lies on the path to the holy Sri Ameya Durga Malleswari Kanaka Durga temple, and almost everybody just misses it. The caves have been run down due to vandalism and acute weathering yet one can still figure out the carvings of Hindu deities like Lord Ganesha on the cave's outer walls. The caves are *infested* with squirrels, so be prepared for them jumping out of the dark caves, only to scamper away! Do pay heed to the pillars of the portico at the end of the cave complex with inscriptions in Brahmi script. It's heart rending to see the dilapidated condition of the caves but imagining the effort invested in building them and carving them out of the hills is just mind boggling!

A small spot to enjoy The Akkanna Madanna Caves, like other early Eastern Chalukyan rock-cut temples, consist of a monolithic rock-cut hall, a mandapa and cave sanctums in the innermost part of the rock. They consist of two cave complexes – the upper (main, larger), and the lower cave.the north of the lower caves is a small park. It contains inscribed pillars, a restored inscribed granite mandapa and recovered mutilated ruins found from nearby damaged temples.

(Visited in January 2021) - At the footsteps of the Indrakeeladri & originally attributed to Vishnukundins (c.5th-6th Centuries CE), but associated with the famous Brahmin ministers Akkanna & Madanna of Qutub Shahi Sultan Abdullah Tanisha (c.late 17th Century CE), Akkanna Madanna Caves seem to be permenantly closed and completely ignored. There is an open Mandapa containing inscriptional pillars, a Shaivaite slabstone but the engravings on the little caves lost shape long back. The site was chained off by ASI and I saw these only from a distance. Scope for good tourism potential, but right now, safe to skip visiting.
