It was a massive and marvellous ancient construction! There are guides on site but better do some reading before going there. Couldn't imagine the engineering capability of ancient times to build such a place.

Baalbek Roman Ruins – Temple of Jupiter Nestled in the fertile Beqaa Valley at the foothills of the Anti-Lebanon mountains, the ruins of Baalbek are among the most awe-inspiring archaeological sites in the world. At its heart once stood the Temple of Jupiter, the largest temple ever built in the Roman Empire and one of the grandest religious structures of antiquity. Originally, Baalbek was a sacred site long before Roman rule, revered by Phoenicians who worshipped the sky god Baal. When the Romans took control in the 1st century BCE, they transformed the city—renamed Heliopolis—into a monumental religious complex. Construction of the Temple of Jupiter began around the 1st century CE and continued for more than two centuries. The temple was built on a colossal stone podium, using some of the largest cut stones ever quarried and moved by humans. Nearby lies the famous Trilithon, three massive limestone blocks weighing around 800–1,000 tons each, a feat of engineering that still puzzles historians and engineers today. At its height, the Temple of Jupiter featured: • 54 colossal Corinthian columns, each about 22 meters (72 feet) high • A vast elevated platform dominating the landscape • Lavish decoration reflecting imperial Roman power Only six columns remain standing today, but even these convey the overwhelming scale and ambition of the structure. Transformation Through Religions and Empires • With the spread of Christianity in the 4th–5th centuries, the temple complex was partially dismantled, and a Christian basilica was constructed in the courtyard rather than inside the pagan temple—symbolizing the transition from pagan worship. • Following the Arab-Muslim conquest in the 7th century, Baalbek became a fortified site. The ruins were adapted into an Islamic fortress (qal‘a), serving defensive and administrative purposes over successive Islamic dynasties. Historical Significance • The Temple of Jupiter is widely regarded as the largest Roman temple ever constructed, surpassing even those in Rome itself. • Baalbek reflects layers of civilization: Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine Christian, and Islamic. • Today, the site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its architectural, religious, and engineering legacy. The fallen pillars and scattered stones are not merely ruins—they are silent witnesses to millennia of human belief, ambition, and adaptation, standing as one of the greatest achievements of the ancient world.

Beyrut'a gelince nerede ineceğinizi soruyor. Tavsiye edilir. Tapınak ücreti 12$ veya 1.200.000 Lübnan lirası.

Absolutely awe-inspiring place — standing among the ruins of Baalbek feels like walking inside a forgotten myth. The sheer scale of the Temple of Jupiter and the precision of the stones leave you speechless. You can almost feel the history vibrating in the air. Go early morning or near sunset for dramatic light and fewer crowds. A must-see for anyone who loves ancient history, architecture, or mystery.

**The Immortal Wonder of the Ancient World: Baalbek Temple** Standing among the colossal stones of Baalbek, I was rendered speechless by the sheer scale and grandeur of what lies before you. This is without question one of the most awe inspiring archaeological sites I have ever visited and earns my highest recommendation. Known in ancient times as Heliopolis or City of the Sun, this magnificent temple complex in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley has rightfully earned its place as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The moment you walk through the propylaea and ascend the grand staircase, you are transported back to the golden age of the Roman Empire. What immediately captures your attention and never lets go is the staggering scale of everything around you. The Temple of Jupiter, the largest religious building ever constructed in the entire Roman empire, originally rose on a massive base and was surrounded by fifty four colossal columns each standing twenty metres high. Today only six of these magnificent columns remain standing, but they are enough to convey the breathtaking ambition of this place, soaring into the sky with a presence that dominates the entire valley. The stonework itself defies belief. The foundation stones of the temple include the legendary trilithon, three massive blocks each weighing approximately 800 tons, while the nearby Stone of the Pregnant Woman in the quarry weighs an astonishing 1000 tons. How these blocks were moved and placed with such precision remains one of the great mysteries of ancient engineering. But Baalbek offers more than just the colossal Temple of Jupiter. To its south stands the remarkably well preserved Temple of Bacchus, which many consider the finest Roman temple ruin in existence. Built in the second century AD, this temple features forty two Corinthian columns surrounding it with intricate carvings of bulls, lions, and dancing Maenads that display a level of craftsmanship that simply takes your breath away. The interior is a masterpiece of Roman artistry with two levels of niches and geometric patterns on the cornice that have survived the centuries remarkably intact. Throughout its long history, this sacred site has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, each civilization leaving its mark and adding layers of history to an already profound place. Today the site continues to live and breathe through the famous Baalbek International Festival where performances on the steps of the ancient temples create magical evenings when music and history intertwine. Visiting requires sturdy walking shoes as the paths are uneven, but every step is worth the effort. Baalbek is not merely a collection of ruins, it is a testament to human ambition, faith, and artistry that transcends millennia. If you have any interest in history, archaeology, or simply standing in a place where you can feel the weight of thousands of years pressing down upon you, this is an absolute must see destination that you will not soon forget.

Baalbek — a dream come true. That morning we got incredibly lucky: apart from our guide, there wasn’t a single tourist around. Just us and the ancient ruins I had dreamed of visiting for the past 25 years (maybe even longer!). And yes — I cried tears of happiness standing there. Thousands of years of history, massive stone structures, countless myths and legends, stories of love, pain, and joy — all gathered in this one sacred place. Before, I used to say: “One day I’ll make it there!” Now I say: “I’ll definitely return — for a whole day, a week… or however long it takes.” 💫

One of the best temples I’ve ever seen! Completely devoid of tourists. Such a treat! I only say about 10 people in the whole complex, in the middle of the summer

This place is not to be missed when you visit Lebanon. For me, this is on my top list. Entrance fee is 1,000,000 LL (for foreigners - my visit is June 2025). My tour guide is very knowledgeable and gave insights. I highly recomend to do the Guide Tour inside the temple that will cost you approx 20USD (for a group) so you would understand and appreciate the place even more. I must say that if ever I get a chance to come back to Lebanon, this will definitely in my tour list again.

One of the best if not the best site in the entire Lebanon hands down. Geeting here may be a task in itself but well worth every effort. The site is itself a UNESCO heritage and very well maintained when compared to the sites in the country. Such a huge site containing ancient 200 years old Roman Temples, Theatres and a tiny museum. The scale of the architecture is unimaginable considering it was built without any tools many millennia ago, especially the mammoth and towering Pillars and the stone ceilings with art on them. The best among this best is however the Temple of Jupiter, a true wonder in itself. The entrance to the Temple of Venus lead from here via an underground tunnel, which unfortunately was closed at the time of writing. The entrance fee is LBP1,000,000 ($11.25), however looks like the money was pocketed by the ticket collector as no ticket was given. Easily spend a half day or 3-4 hrs just walking and exploring around.
