Colombo National Museum

I visited the National Museum of Colombo today and had a really interesting experience. The museum is a great place to explore Sri Lanka’s history, culture, and heritage all in one place. The building itself is beautiful and has a classic colonial style, which adds to the overall atmosphere. Inside, there are many exhibits ranging from ancient artifacts and royal regalia to traditional art and cultural displays. It gives a good overview of the country’s past, especially for anyone who wants to understand Sri Lanka beyond just its tourist spots. Some sections were more engaging than others, and a few areas could benefit from better maintenance or updated information. But overall, it is still worth visiting. It is a calm and educational place, ideal for students, researchers, and anyone interested in history. I would recommend setting aside a couple of hours to fully explore it.

A really great experience for anyone interested in Sri Lankan history. The museum is neatly organized, clean, and takes you through the prehistoric era, the transition of different kingdoms, and into the modern age with many valuable exhibits. A ticket is required for entry, and it is highly recommended for both tourists and locals. There is also a separate natural history museum within the same premises, which focuses mainly on animals and biological exhibits, and is worth visiting as well.

Recently visited National Museum of Colombo again after many years, and it brought back so many childhood memories of my first visit. Walking through the museum felt like travelling through Sri Lanka’s history, culture, and heritage all over again. The beautiful colonial-era architecture, ancient royal artifacts, traditional masks, statues, manuscripts, weapons, and archaeological collections make the museum one of the most valuable historical places in the country. What makes the museum special is the way it preserves the story of Sri Lanka from ancient kingdoms to the colonial period. Every gallery has something meaningful to discover, and even as an adult, I found myself amazed by the details and history behind each exhibit. The ultimate highlight of my visit was seeing the newly added, preserved body of the legendary elephant Nadungamuwe Raja. It was incredibly emotional and moving to see such an iconic piece of our heritage honored this way. If you haven't been in years (or have never been), it's time to go back. A beautiful museum with multiple sections including natural history, agriculture, and a section on wildlife, with a focus on Sri Lanka's historical heritage. It perhaps did not focus much on the British colonial era and parts of contemporary modern history. It is a good museum for those interested in historical studies and research.

When entered from the gate you need to walk upto the building to entrance to buy tickets. There are two museums for you to visit, one is the national history museum and the other is the natural history museum. For local adults, for both the museums it's 120 rupees (sorry I don't know the price for one museum. Maybe half price of above. However, you can buy tickets for one and visit one as well). It took atleast three hours for us to finish the first museum. Anyways you can have a refreshing ice cream or drinking from their small canteen while moving between rooms in the upstairs. However, you cannot take food or drinks while you're inside the exhibit rooms. And also you can take videos only if you buy a ticket for that for the entrance which is 2500 rupees. But still you are allowed to take pictures.

The Colombo National Museum has a massive and fascinating collection of Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage, ancient Buddhist statues, and colonial artifacts. You get a fantastic overview of the island's 2,500+ year history. The only downside is that the main galleries. Also, keep in mind that the layout forces you to follow a one-way path through all rooms, so there's no quick exit midway. Despite the heat, it’s an absolute must-see if you are spending a day in Colombo!

The highlight is undoubtedly the Royal Regalia, including the intricately carved golden throne and crown of the last King of Kandy—seeing these in person is a powerful experience.

Each section is informative and helps visitors understand how people lived and how Sri Lankan civilization evolved through time. Overall, the museum is well organized and educational. It is a great place for anyone interested in history, archaeology, and culture. I highly recommend visiting the Colombo National Museum if you are in Colombo.

I recently revisited the National Museum after many years, and it was an even better experience than I remembered from my childhood. The collection of ancient artifacts is stunning , there are pieces so beautiful and historic you simply can't take your eyes off them. If you haven't been since you were a kid, I highly recommend visiting again; you’ll appreciate the value and detail so much more now. (Tip: Go in the morning to beat the crowds for a more peaceful experience. There are also clean washrooms and a canteen on-site for convenience.)

The Museum Library holds a prominent place among the libraries in Sri Lanka. It still features its historic tables and chairs, but the standout highlight is its antique ceiling fan. This vintage fan has wooden blades and still works perfectly today. The library staff deserve special mention. They work tirelessly to provide readers with accurate information.

Colombo National Museum is a great place to visit if you are interested in Sri Lankan history. There is also a separate National Museum of Natural History nearby, which adds a scientific dimension to the visit. You can easily spend a whole day exploring the collections, and from my perspective, it’s definitely worth a visit for history enthusiasts.

National museum was a great experience and it was a travel through the rich history of Sri Lanka. Exhibition areas are well organized with lots of information. It is easy to understand and follow. I specially love the Shanthikarma model scene. When we visit the agricultural area all models look old, dusty and clothes looks very old rugs. Other major issue is the heat. THIS MUSEUM MUST HAVE AIR CONDITION FACILITY. IT WILL BE GOOD FOR EXHIBITS AND VISITORS. This is the only museum in the world I have seen in such a bad condition. The other issue is the canteen. The canteen is in very poor condition. It needs an improvement since lots of local and foreign tourists are visiting this daily. If you can add a souvenir shop at the end of the museum instead of a book shop that will be great and a good income.

Great place, very warm inside but not too crowded and affordable. To go to the natural history and regular museum would be a full day thing if youre going at a slow pace. really beautiful 12th century artefacts and super interesting to see prehistoric items as well as some global pieces like some chinese and roman artefacts. the natural history museum was more interesting personally and had cool animal fossils including a dinosaur femur from libya as well as the full length blue whale skeleton, so cool!!!! general focus in the museum was on the kandyan kingdom and mainly buddhist artefacts, but there’s also some focus on the anuradhapura kingdom and the traditional masked dances, etc The experience could be better, eg. more info on where and how the artefacts were found, maybe a pamphlet for more detail. Overall nothing super exciting to see (personally) but fun to go at least once!

I would really recommend this place if you are intrigued by history. not only it provides a variety of historical things related to Sri Lanka and related to another countries. It has 15 different categorize rooms that you can go and see it also has a separate building about natural science history of plants and animals and that place is another great option if you go there because the same ticket applies to both places. I haven’t attached the photos of the normal museum because we have to buy a permit to photograph there. but I have attached some pictures of the natural history museum because in there it is allowed to photograph.

館内は2階建てで多くの展示室があり、非常にボリューミー スリランカの古代から近代までの歴史、王冠や玉座などの至宝、伝統的な仮面や民族衣装など展示が多岐にわたります、2時間はあると良いと思います 入口にて大きな荷物は無料で預かってくれました 自然史博物館も共通で見れるのかな、時間の都合でパスしてしまったのが残念

It’s a quiet, reflective escape that provides the essential context needed before exploring the rest of the island. The National Museum of Colombo has great potential, but unfortunately, it doesn’t quite live up to expectations. First, air conditioning is a must in a place like this. Without it, it’s difficult to fully enjoy the visit, take your time, and read through the exhibits—especially in Colombo’s heat and humidity. Second, the exhibition could be much more engaging and interactive. For families with children, it would be great to include simple missions, interactive displays, or activities that encourage exploration and make the experience more enjoyable and memorable. At the moment, the museum feels a bit outdated and not very captivating. The entrance fee for foreigners is 1,600 LKR for adults and 600 LKR for children, which feels quite high considering the overall experience. Unfortunately, I would only recommend visiting if you don’t have other plans.

A worthwhile visit. We visited on a weekday so there is little to no crowd (apart for some schoolchildren). The museum houses a numerous artifacts and displays, ranging from the times of Sri Lanka's ancient civilization to modern history such as the colonial period. It is worth the ticket price (you also get access to the Museum of Natural History just nearby) and I highly recommend school students and archaeology enthusiasts to visit.
