A Pristine Spiritual Site with a Confusing Ticketing Process I visited the Dambulla Cave Temple on February 10th. While the temple itself is absolutely pristine, pure, and a must-see, the logistics for first-time visitors are quite confusing and need improvement. IMPORTANT TICKET TIP: Do not start climbing the stairs at the Golden Temple (where the giant Buddha statue is) if you don’t have a ticket yet! The ticket office is located about 400 meters down the main road. If you start climbing from the Golden Temple side, you will likely have to come all the way back down to get your ticket and then climb approximately 300 stairs to reach the caves. Pros: The caves are incredibly well-preserved and offer a deep sense of peace. The views from the top are stunning. Cons/Areas for Improvement: Signage: There is a serious lack of clear directions at the Golden Temple entrance regarding where to buy tickets. This needs to be addressed for tourists coming from either side. Internal Navigation: Once inside the complex, more signboards are needed to guide visitors. This would help people navigate independently without feeling pressured to hire additional guide services just to find the way. Pricing for SAARC: While the 3000 LKR fee for foreign tourists is understandable for a UNESCO site, I suggest a discounted rate for SAARC nationals to make it more accessible to regional neighbors. Overall, a beautiful experience, but please fix the signage to save visitors some unnecessary steps in the heat!

Visiting Dambulla Cave Temple was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my trip to Sri Lanka. The atmosphere is incredibly serene, and the panoramic views from the top are absolutely breathtaking. The cave interiors are stunning, filled with beautifully preserved Buddha statues and intricate ceiling paintings that feel almost alive with history and devotion. You can truly sense the spiritual energy the moment you step inside. The site is well maintained, and walking through the different caves feels like traveling back in time. A must-visit destination for anyone who appreciates culture, history, and peaceful surroundings.

Went today and really enjoyed it. There are a lot of stairs to reach the top, so be ready for a bit of a climb, especially in the heat. Luckily, there’s a fresh water pipe at the top where you can cool down, which is very helpful after all those steps. The caves are impressive. The statues inside are amazing — there are so many of them, and the details are beautiful. The paintings on the walls and ceilings make the whole place feel very special and full of history. Definitely worth visiting if you’re in the area.

Dambulla Cave Temple is so, so, so worth the long climb up. Yes, it is a bit of a workout, especially in the heat, but once you reach the caves and step inside, it all makes sense. The scale, the artwork, and the setting are genuinely impressive and feel very different from anything else you will see in Sri Lanka. A very important tip first: do not go in shorts. Dress appropriately or you will not be allowed in, and it will only slow you down. You also have to leave your shoes behind and pay for storage, which is something to keep in mind before starting the climb. We did not get a guide because we were a bit short on time and had already found all the information we needed online. That said, if you want the finer details and deeper explanations, getting a guide is probably worth it. Just be aware that you will be paying the official “tourist” price. The area around the entrance is quite commercialized, with vendors pushing flowers, jewelry, and other trinkets quite aggressively. Honestly, ignore them. Most of the items are cheaply made and you would be far better off buying souvenirs in places like Pettah anyway. If you absolutely must buy something, always haggle. Despite these small intrusions, they really do not take much away from the experience itself. Once you are inside the caves, everything fades into the background. The murals, statues, and atmosphere make the climb completely worthwhile and turn Dambulla Cave Temple into one of those stops you will be glad you did not skip.

So much rich history. Very well maintained. Take sandals as you will need to walk bare feet. You should avoid shorts, although you can get a lungi to cover up. It is an active temple. The walk is a bit of an exercise and worth it. Lots of monkeys! Photography allowed but No selfies .. it is disrespectful to the buddhist culture

We really loved visiting Dambulla Cave Temple. It’s an amazing place with beautiful caves and impressive statues. The hike up is not that bad and totally worth it once you reach the top. We recommend going early in the morning to avoid the crowds and enjoy the place more peacefully. Definitely a must-see when visiting the area! 🙏

As a tourist, visiting the Dambulla Cave Temple completely fascinated me. I was truly amazed by how the Buddha statues were created inside the caves centuries ago — carved with such precision, grace, and devotion, all without modern tools. Each statue feels alive with history and spirituality. The size, detail, and calm expressions of the Buddha reflect incredible craftsmanship and deep faith. Standing there, it’s hard not to feel humbled and inspired by the dedication of those who built this sacred place. An unforgettable cultural and spiritual experience.

The Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is one of the most impressive and spiritually rich sites I’ve visited in Sri Lanka. Located atop a small hill, the temple complex consists of several beautifully preserved caves filled with ancient statues and intricate Buddhist murals that date back over 2,000 years. The climb to the temple is fairly easy and offers great views of the surrounding countryside. Once inside the caves, you're immediately struck by the peaceful atmosphere and the sheer beauty of the artwork. Each cave has its own unique layout, with statues of the Buddha in various poses, along with paintings covering the ceilings and walls that tell stories from Buddhist teachings. The site is clean, well-maintained, and managed with respect for its religious significance. It's not only a place of worship but also a historical treasure that gives deep insight into Sri Lanka’s cultural and religious heritage. I highly recommend taking your time to explore each cave and enjoy the peaceful environment. Whether you're a history lover, a spiritual seeker, or just a traveler looking for something special, Dambulla Cave Temple is a must-visit. It’s both humbling and inspiring.

Beautiful temple built against the rock to cover the shallow caves covered with gorgeous paintings and containing many statues. Note the carved cliff above the white buildings done to make a drip sill to prevent rain tracking down into the caves. Best done with a tour guide if you want to appreciate the history of the temple. Additionally, we went early morning and missed the big rush of other tourists.

The Dambulla Cave Temple is definitely a unique site and the ancient cave paintings are very impressive, but there are a few things to know before you go. First, the name "Cave Temple" is a bit misleading—you don't go down into a dark cavern. Instead, you have to hike quite a bit uphill, as the temples are built into massive rock overhangs. Once you reach the top, the detail in the Buddha paintings and statues is remarkable. However, the experience depends entirely on your interest level. If you love religious art, you could spend an hour here; if not, you’ll likely find yourself walking through all five caves quite fast. I'd recommend getting a guide if you're interested. Personally, I’d give it a 3/5. It is special in its own way, but I wouldn't necessarily go far out of my way just for this if your schedule is tight. It’s an interesting stop if you’re already passing through, but be prepared for the climb.

A visit to Dambulla Cave Temple is truly fascinating. The caves are filled with ancient statues and beautiful paintings that give a glimpse into centuries of history and Buddhist art. There are quite a few steps to climb and an entry ticket is required, but the effort is well worth it. The views from the temple are stunning and add to the overall peaceful and memorable experience.

Dambulla Cave Temple is an impressive and educational site, especially if you understand the meaning behind the murals and statues. Important to know: There are official guides at the entrance with an official price of around 750 LKR. In reality, some guides expect 1500 LKR and may show dissatisfaction if you pay only the official rate. This is not mandatory — agree on the price clearly in advance and stand your ground calmly. After visiting temple you can make short stop to enjoy beautiful sunset :) left side direct near entrance Price for a ticket- 3000 rupees Reaching the ancient caves requires a climb of approximately 364 steps. Additional tips: There are designated areas to leave your shoes — don’t leave them randomly. It is customary to leave a small tip for staff assisting with shoes or guidance. It’s a small gesture but generally expected. In one of the caves there is a place that, according to local residents, is sacred - it is easy to miss, so I recommend paying attention It remains an active place of worship and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is Sri Lanka’s largest and best-preserved cave temple complex, with a history spanning over 2,200 years. Overall, Dambulla is absolutely worth visiting, but being informed will help you avoid unnecessary discomfort and enjoy the experience fully.

ABSOLUTELY A MUST!! One of the best temple I've ever visited! Maybe it's not huge, but for Buddhism is very important. Plus the view from the top is amazing! Once you enter in the temple you will be amazed by the beauty of the place, the calm, and the peace. Suggested to go in the late afternoon to avoid huge crowds. Prepare your feet for almost 1000 steps to go up there. Entrance fee 3000LKR

An amazing cave temple consisting of so many Buddha statues in various postures. It needs a little bit of a climb to reach the cave temple, but easily manageable. One is sure to get impressed by the effort taken to install the statues and also the paintings on the ceilings. A must place to visit.

Beautiful place however children didn’t like taking their shoes off and having to walk on the hot paving and concrete paths. It was also new to us that we had to pay to keep our shoes on the rack. Our guide stopped us from getting taken advantage of as tourists so it was only a few hundred LKR. That aside, you have to go visit to fully appreciate the temple and how it’s been carved into the side of a cave. Simply beautiful. I would have spent hours longer exploring however the children in our group weren’t quite old enough to appreciate the significance and history behind it all.

Dambulla Cave Temple is one of the most powerful and unique spiritual sites I’ve visited in Sri Lanka. The climb up is slightly tiring, but once you enter the caves, it’s completely worth it. The ancient Buddha statues, detailed wall paintings, and the calm atmosphere inside the caves make you pause and truly take it in. The place feels deeply sacred and historically rich, not commercialized, which adds to its charm. The views from the top are beautiful, and the entire experience feels timeless. A must-visit if you want to understand Sri Lanka’s culture, history, and spirituality in one place.
