Ellora Cave 22

Known as Nilakantha, this cave is reached by a sopan a (staircase) .The cave's courtyard has a monolith Nandi-mandapa. A group of Saptamatrikas adorn its south wall. Two dvarapalas stand guard on either end of the verandah, one four-armed and the other two-armed. There is a raised lateral gallery on either end of the hall which has eight square pillars. The northern wall of the vestibule has sculptures of Ganesa and Ganga while the opposite wall has Kartikeya. The shrine is simple and has a linga on a circular pitha. The space to the north of the door-jamb has Sarasvati and the corresponding opposite wall-space, a Gaja-Lakshmi. The bracket-figures of the pillars in front of the shrine are beautiful specimens of sculpture.

A door leads into the court of Cave 22. It is 42 feet square with an ascent of three steps leads to a slightly sloping platform. O that stands the Nandi Mandapa a four door chamber partly ruined. On the south side of the court is a chapel with the Ashtamatrikas, all four armed and the eighth with three arms. Thirteen steps lead up to the cave. In front of which stand dwarapala. It has four pillars in front and two on each of the other three sides of the hall, all plain with bracket capitals. At each end of a chapel is with an altar. On the walls of this vestibule are sculptures of Ganesha, the three Devis and a four armed Vishnu. In the shrine is a pedestal and a highly polished linga. The locals smear blue streaks upon the linga, so the name Nilakanta.

वेरूळ लेणी क्रमांक २२ : हे लेणे `नीलकंठ’ या नावाने ओळखले जाते. तेथील नंदी-मंडपाच्या उजव्या बाजूच्या मंडपात सप्तमातृकांची शिल्पे आहेत. शिवाय गणेश, कार्तिकेय, गजलक्ष्मी आणि कमलासना देवी यांच्या मूर्ती आहेत. गर्भगृहात शिवलिंग आहे. शिल्पे, शिल्पपट आणि अलंकृत स्तंभ ही या पडझड झालेल्या लेण्याची वैशिष्ट्ये आहेत. त्याच्या उत्तरेकडील भिंतीवर एक शिल्पपट आहे. अग्नी, मारेकारी आणि जलप्रवासातील आपत्ती यांच्यापासून अवलोकितेश्वर संरक्षण करीत आहे, अशा आशयाचा हा शिल्पपट असून यातच उजव्या बाजूला सिंह, नाग, हत्ती व पिशाच्चे यांसारख्या आपत्तींपासूनही तो रक्षण करतो, हे या शिल्पातून दाखविले आहे. बुद्ध आणि बोधिसत्त्वाचे बदलते आणि भौतिकतेकडे झुकणारे स्वरूप या शिल्पपटातून सूचित होते. मध्यभागी असलेल्या मंडपात बारा खांब असून त्यांवर पूर्ण कलश आणि पत्रपल्लवी कोरलेल्या आहेत. मंडपाच्या बाजूच्या दोन्ही भिंतींत आठ, तर गर्भगृहाच्या दोन्ही बाजूंसही दोन खोल्या असून गर्भगृहात बुद्धमूर्ती आहे. द्वारपालांपैकी डाव्या बाजूची मूर्ती अवलोकितेश्वराची आहे. या लेण्याच्या उत्तरेच्या भिंतीत प्रलंबपाद आसनातील, धर्मचक्रप्रवर्तन मुद्रेतील बुद्धमूर्ती व अवलोकितेश्वराचा शिल्पपट आहे. उजव्या भिंतीवर तारा व वज्रयान दैवतसमूहातील देवतेचे शिल्प आहे.

Cave Number 22 at Ellora is easily accessible through a flight of stairs. It houses the shrine of Lord Shiva, and is less visited. The courtyard features a monolith structure of Nandi, and the cave is well maintained, with safety nets and grills all around.
