Cave 33, also known as Indra Sabha because of cave 32 conexión, dates from the 9th century and is easily the finest of the Jain series at Ellora. It's dedicated to Mahavir, but honestly, the whole place feels different from the Hindu and Buddhist caves – more refined in a way. You enter through a simple gateway into an open courtyard, and right in the middle stands the shrine. The walls are carved with elephants, lions, and tirthankaras – the Jain holy figures – and the craftsmanship is top notch. But the real showstopper is the ceiling. It's richly carved with a massive lotus right at the centre, and if you look carefully, you can still see signs of painted figures among clouds. It must have been breathtaking when the colours were fresh. What really struck me is something I read afterwards and completely agree with: no other cave temple at Ellora is so complete in its arrangement or so finished in its workmanship as the upper storey of Indra Sabha. You can feel it when you're there – every surface has been thought through, every carving seems deliberate and polished. It's not the biggest or the most famous, but it might just be the most perfect. Definitely don't skip this one

Visited the Jain Caves (30–34) at Ellora and really loved the peaceful vibe here. These 8th-century caves are beautifully carved and less crowded compared to the main caves. The caves are interconnected, making it interesting to explore each section step by step. The statues of Lord Mahavira are stunning and give a very calm, spiritual feel. The intricate sculptures show amazing craftsmanship from that time. Also noticed ancient water wells inside, which shows how thoughtfully these caves were designed. If you’re visiting Ellora, don’t skip these caves—they’re quiet, detailed, and truly worth seeing.

Close to Cave 32 is the south-facing Cave 33 also known as Jagannatna-sabha. The western wall of the courtyard has a cave with six pillars. The verandah-pillars are all elaborately carved. At either end of the verandah are the usual yaksha and yakshi, with the usual sculptures of Gommata and Parsvanatha. Enshrined within the sanctum is Sumatinatha. Cells at either extremity of the cave are also dedicated to the same Tirthankara. Numerous sculptures of Tirthankaras can also be seen on the walls. The main cave is two-storeyed. The first storey of this cave is poorly planned. The shrine is preceded by a shallow vestibule and has a Sumatinatha image. The pillars, both simple kalasa -topped and kumbha-valh-cum-kalasa-topped type, are intricately carved. The upper floor is spacious and consists of a verandah and a large hall of twelve pillars. The pillars are massive and ornate: some of them are square at the bottom and have kalasas at the top, while others are of kumbha-valli-cum-kalasa -topped style. The shrine has an ornamental facade with a Jina on either side. Within it is a Sumatinatha figure, his emblem, the chakra, being borne by a dwarf, while the walls are decorated with Parsvanatha and other Tirthankaras. Some fragments of ancient paintings remain, such as the large santavasarana painting, that once adorned the wide ceiling. The ceilings of the aisles also have paintings. Their quality is akin to those of the Indra-sabha and of the cave belonging to the Ganesa-lena group.

Visited Aug 2018. The last cave at Ellora. Difficult ro see or photograph the interior due to poor light. Carry a flashlight to view properly. See attached pics. Don't miss the large open lotus on the ceiling. By the time people reach here they are pretty exhausted, I was, LOL.

Cave 34 is best reached from Indra Sabha by a communicating passage with rock-hewn door at the left of the western shrine. It has of course, a separate entrance as well, with a finely carved arch. The figure are again of the Jain saints and their attendants. Some of the best examp of Jain sculpture are to be seen here in the decorated pillars and recess the walls.

Certain inscriptions in Cave 34, are not deciphered as yet but were likely to have been executed between 800 and 850 CE. Other inscriptions, such as the one by Sri Nagavarma, are thought to date from the 9th or 10th century. This cave features a large seated Parshvanatha Jina with four camara attendants, two of whom hold fly-whisks and seemingly emerge from the back of the Jina's throne. As with many other Jain excavations, a large pair of yaksa-yaksi is also found in this cave near the Jina.In the back of the cave is a bearded figure with a bowl containing round sacrificial offerings, which have shapes reminiscent of pindas (rice balls) or laddus (sweetmeat). This suggests the scene may be related to Jain devotional worship, possibly a shraddha ceremony. The Parshvanatha in the cave is paired with a standing Gommateshvara, and accompanied by other carvings showing musicians playing a variety of instruments such as horns, drums, conchs, trumpets, and cymbals.A particularly notable feature of the cave is a giant, open lotus carving on its ceiling and rooftop, which is found in only one other Jain excavation and one Hindu Cave 25 in all of Ellora. The placement of the lotus on the cave rather than a sculpture symbolizes that the temple is a divine place. There exists a Jain temple up on the hill that contains a massive 16 feet tall rock carved Parshvanath image from the Rashtrakuta period that is still in active worship and thus not protected by the ASI. Six hundred steps need to climbed to reach it. It is managed by a Jain gurukul in the village.
