After graduating with a degree from a brick and mortar uni years ago, I decided to further my education through the OU and I couldn't be more happy. The curriculum is easy to follow and very thorough. What many fail to understand is that this is a primarily online learning journey, where you are teaching yourself most of the course content using the helpful guides and textbooks the school provides. Nobody is there to hold your hand and that is what makes it harder than most traditional learning experiences. It's a challenge and I love it but it's definitely not for everyone. If you are a go-getter who thrives in a remote-learning environment, this school is for you. If you are someone who is not self-discipline, looking for an easy way to get a degree or who needs constant feedback from your profs, tutors, fellow students, etc. this school is most certainly not for you. GO OU!

I am very grateful to The Open University for giving me the opportunity to achieve my health and social care degree. As a working mum with a disability, it was so difficult to attend an in person university. Study was part time and flexible. They gave me a lot of understanding and support, extending deadlines and giving me second chances to write assignments if necessary. Gaining a degree has given me the opportunity to apply for more jobs. Thank you OU.

It was all happy at first , do my own studying, submit coursework, do online exams. Until I had to use a personal tutor. My course required personal tutor to approve research in order to complete a degree. After a few emails my personal tutor didn't help much and started to ignore me completely. Launched a complaint, next resit they gave me a staff tutor (senior) who gave a quick review in one email and ignored other email for a month and any requests for a phone call. I wish I went to an actual University. At least they have open office hours where you can visit an actual professor to ask questions. Online tests had errors in them too.

I am extremely disappointed with my experience with the Open University. I withdrew from my course on 27 February and was told I would receive a refund of over £4,000 within 30 days, as per their own terms. It is now well beyond that timeframe and I have still not received my money. I have chased multiple times, provided all requested information, and set clear deadlines, yet I have received little to no meaningful communication. At one point I was told there was an issue with my card details, but no one contacted me to resolve it. The lack of urgency, poor communication, and failure to follow their own policies is completely unacceptable, especially when dealing with such a large amount of money. I would strongly advise others to be cautious.

I have recently started a degree with the open university and cannot say I would recommend it at all! They do hardly anything to help you, tutors do not help at all and you get one tutorial a month which is supposed to aid your studies but you leave more confused than before! It is very limited in its support for students and unless you learn by purely reading material for hours on end with no possibility for discussion or asking questions then this route is definitely not for you. I regret starting my course for sure.

Back in 2015 when I graduated, ALL members of staff were so helpful and ALL tutors explained things to me so they made sense. Long distance learning is just as good as being on site. I would wholeheartedly suggest it.

Stay well clear of the Open Uni! After doing a short course with them costing me £1,600, I’ve found that the student loan keeps increasing due to interest. You end up falling further and further into debt, even while you’re paying it back through your salary. Remember student loans go against buying your first house.

Do not put your faith into anything to do with this so called university, they are a business out to make money. You will get limited help, if any and if you try to complain it won’t go anywhere. Apparently being in intensive care is not a good reason for completing a TMA so they will fail you. You can take the course again, if you pay again. My advice is to try and enroll into a really uni. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME.

Didn’t even last the month because of personal issues. So deferred. Yet still been SLC for a years fees nearly 4k. It’s like being forced to pay a full years energy bill even though only used 3 weeks of energy. No wonder they do ok!!!!! Rob people blind and get away with it. I will be working out 3 weeks of study and that’s what I will be paying SLC. Daylight robbery.

Studying with them, the worst idea ever. They mess with feelings but not cyber terrorists. When running a uni make sure the info is communicated clearly, making sense, or it'll be easy to push us away. This former, very popular, uni shouldn't be getting loads of 1 stars. I really miss the days when university made more sense. I hadn't failed one module unlike the previous uni. The tutor is allowed to mark as long as it's not with Simon from BGT.🎈🎉🎊🎆🎇 What was once full of meaning for people is now becoming meaningless & I shall leave it at that.;)😉 I don't want them to close down ever. We are all hoping that they are doing their best to prevent that from happening. Finishing up is a blessing in disguise I suppose. They have no funding to be of any help, students should be so lucky. I could have got into a lot of soapy bubble. Thankfully that didn't happen, I don't deserve it. Either win free food shopping vouchers or just join another uni. I could go on forever but it is very important to have a positive learning experience. It is actually all over finally which I'm glad, way too much hassle. One of my tutors believed that I'm a quirky individual with the potential to get a distinction. They turned out to be spot on. Maybe just replace the nightmarish institution with my learning hub. This is going to apply to me without a doubt. Money just makes some people very rude & dismissive, we deserve better. Open learning is closed off pretty much. Isn't my review pretty including text as follows: ❤︎ ♥︎ 𔘓⁩ ♡ ᥫ᭡ ✶ 𖤐 ★ 𒀭 𑁍 ꕤ ❑ ❒ !i!?!!online experiments=excellent ❝ ୨୧ ‣ › ⌫ ✧ ✦⭒ ✓ ✘ 𓈈 ᚙ ⩨ ஃ To be fair I have difficulties, we all have difficulties, even the uni too (the strikes were not a good sign) oh dear. I did well considering, someone blamed me as if it's my fault. It is so overated but that's just my opinion after all. Don't get yourself into a mess, research your universities by all means. This has been no joke, it has already been treated like one. A pass usually means you can go onto the next stage. In fact I'm suprised I get to graduate. I am beginning to think that they punish people for no reason at all. If that's not the case then they are certainly unfit for purpose either way. Anyway I feel like the lad who got rejected at Waitross after many years of volunteering. If this weren't the case the OU would get many more stars. It was good while it lasted (the situation turning very sour was the last thing I ever expected despite many, many years of experience) & this review is not written by AI either (even although the subject is erratic in itself). :) The open uni is most bonkers/clued up or clueless/impossible/impolite/impatient/passive aggressive, should be sacked/great for some. It is even possible to fail and succeed at the same time. That's never happened before, so you are better off studying at Heriot Watt. I did everything to save my course but was painted the bad guy. At the end of the day a pass is a pass 🥳, apart from "'it's not legit' coming from the great(est pain in the donkey and yet somewhat famous) uni."[... been sick with a lesion on my back for 4 years. This has costed me four years at uni therefore staff need to be empathetic.] I got pulled up falsely for AI generated plagarism (they used AI themselves to achieve this) and passed. A family member is sending a congratulations gift. It is a real mixed bag. I am on a year's study break only to quit ironically. The OU has useful resources such as short courses. I am also barred from making complaints. They are well aware that things are not up to scratch. They just do not want me to rub it in. Some of the tutors are lovely though. *I could have lost my module I worked so hard for.* However I did do well in the TMAs, what more could you ask for (so much for the special circumstances). My certificate is on it's way to secure a pass and close down the penalty because the appeal didn't work. A word of advice, make sure your work is not too vague and repetitive. If you are needing guidance, I recommend student advice, they're pretty supportive.

A terrible higher institution to study with on the Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship no support from the unprofessional staff who work at OU and nore are they willing to help either. It is shame to state that I had a extreme difficult to study with them.

I don't think this is a reliable academic institution... No idea how they are certified..100% agree to what people said earlier... material is so outdated, tutors are so boring they cite the same material during tutorials....and they have super high grading criteria... Thankfully I quit here ... I started at another distance learning university in UK ... And seriously 1000% game changer ... I am about to graduate soon.. The BEST decision of my life... If you really want to study please reconsider ...There is plenty of UK universities that offer distance learning.. So do your research and avoid this 'university'

Website layout is clunky and outdated at best, tutors are hit and miss, some more bothered than others. You are essentially paying tuition fees to self study, as the only input from tutors are tutorials every now and then and marking assignments. I feel you would get much better value for money in a standard university.

Without the Open University I would never have achieved a Bachelors and I will forever be greatful. The only issue I have with the University is the lack of consistency when it comes to tutors, as you can have multiple tutors throughout one module which can affect your grades. If you lack the traditional qualifications needed to attend an alternative University but still desire to seek higher education then the OU is for you. Best of luck to all who decide to take this path.

I have completed 4 out of 6 years studying towards a degree with the Open University. If I had realised what studying with the open university would really be like I would never have gone down this route, but now I am financially committed with no option to get out with fees increasing drastically year on year and the overall "service" reducing in my opinion. Most of the time I attend the online tutorials, I leave more confused than when I went into them and there are no longer any face to face tutorials. Tutor support is minimal - queries often don't get answered for days on end. I understand that this is distance learning, but for the fees that you pay year on year you do not get a lot for your money especially with text books and module materials having been scrapped.

If you are considering studying with The Open University, opening these reviews may feel quite daunting and, quite frankly, may put you off doing it all together. However, I would encourage you to keep open-minded that everyone has a different experience and just because one person had a bad one, it doesn't mean you will. I studied with The Open University for 5 years and received a first class honours degree in Psychology in July 2023. I had to leave school at 15 due to illness and missed all of the crucial exams that would have enabled me to go down the traditional university route. If it had not been for The Open University, and the opportunity to study again without the strict entry criteria then I would not be where I am now. It is definitely hard work and you have to put the hours in (I was working full time and studying in the evenings and the weekends). However, if you are motivated, you can absolutely do it and it will be so worth it. If you require a lot of teaching from a tutor, and aren't able to do independent learning or research you may find it difficult but I actually enjoyed being able to learn at my own pace and in my own time. The learning materials and online study pages were easy to use and assignments were clear. My tutors were helpful although I did not need to reach out often. If you are thinking about it and believe you can do it, dont let the negative reviews put you off - it could absolutely be the right thing for you!

What can one truly expect from a university that accepts absolutely everyone, regardless of academic background, preparation, or previous achievement? The answer is simple: you get exactly what you’d expect. The Open University is, quite frankly, the council estate of UK higher education. It may be large, it may be well-established, and it certainly knows how to advertise itself — but the reality is mass education on a conveyor belt. You’re not a student with a name. You’re a number in a system. A file. A data point. The academic experience? Inconsistent at best. In one class you’ll find someone with years of professional and academic experience — and right next to them, someone who just googled “how to write an essay” last night. It creates not a rich learning environment, but an intellectual dissonance. As for the ideological climate — let’s just say: the university has chosen a very clear political direction, and it’s leaning so far left it might fall over. For students with traditional values, a belief in family, faith, and real equality (not selective equality), the experience can feel less like education and more like quiet indoctrination. Not in your face — but always there, in the tone, in the curriculum, in the “expected” responses. Of course, I believe in dignity and respect for all people. But no one should be treated differently based on ideology. Unfortunately, that principle doesn’t seem to hold much weight anymore in this institution. And finally — prestige. Let’s be honest: Having a degree from The Open University doesn’t carry the same weight or respect as degrees from more selective, academically rigorous universities. You don’t say with pride, “I studied at the Open University.” You say it with a slight pause, hoping the subject will move on. In short: accessible? Yes. Affordable? Often. Prestigious or intellectually fulfilling? Not really.

Poor quality in every aspect. The website is full of glitches, creating an account is impossible, as it doesn't recognize my username or password, and I haven't received any emails to verify my account. I feel sorry for anyone who wasted their money on this garbage.

I enrolled at the Open University with high hopes, but my experience has been extremely disappointing and stressful. Despite completing all my assignments (TMAs) on time, some did not upload correctly. The University never flagged this issue until it was too late to fix. My tutor ignored two emails, and when I called Student Services, I was assured it would be followed up — but I received no communication at all. I raised a formal complaint and even explained the stress this caused, but my emails have largely gone unanswered. In one response, the University suggested I contact OUSBA to see if there was a way to retrospectively apply for a Student Finance loan to pay off my OUSBA debt. Given that OUSBA is a credit agreement regulated by the FCA and I had engaged in good faith thinking I was on a standard student loan, I found this advice unhelpful and dismissive. I am now being asked to repay £1,818 for a course I did not benefit from. The University has ignored my request for a refund, despite clear obligations under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 to provide services with reasonable care and skill. Overall, what should have been a positive opportunity for self-improvement has become a source of stress and financial loss. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend the Open University.
