A must visit for all Kiwis and Aussies who visit Turkey. A pilgrimage to honour the fallen. My wife and I are both ex military so special for us. We were with a tour company, Crowded House Tours, so got to see all main sites.

Sailing through the narrow waters of the Dardanelles, I passed by the silent shores of Gallipoli Peninsula—a place where history doesn’t feel like the past, it feels present. This land holds the memory of the Gallipoli Campaign, one of the most intense and defining battles of World War I. Thousands of soldiers from the Ottoman Empire, Australia, New Zealand, and United Kingdom fought and fell here, turning these cliffs and shores into a graveyard of courage and sacrifice. From the sea, the land looks calm—almost too calm. But knowing what happened here changes everything. Every wave feels heavier, like it carries echoes of those who never made it back home. The sight of the Çanakkale Martyrs' Memorial standing tall against the horizon is not just a landmark—it’s a reminder. A reminder of resilience, loss, and the cost of war. As a seafarer, you don’t always get to step onto such places. Sometimes, you just pass by. But places like Gallipoli don’t need you to arrive—they reach you anyway. It’s not just a destination. It’s a silence that speaks.

When one looks at the various battlefields it appears insignificant. This was the area where about 300,000 people lost their lives. Far more importantly, is the significance of this battle. This contributed to the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the preparation for the Republic of Turkey. Also, for a component of the forces who fought – troops from Australia and New Zealand. They commemorate the start of the seaborne invasion as ANZAC day. This event gave these 2 countries individual identities which they now have. In my opinion, 3 nations were formed as a result of this battle. That is the significance of the battles that was fought here.

One of the most important and moving places we visited in our trip through Turkey. They have done a wonderful job of honouring the soldiers who lost their lives there. The lone pine memorial is without comparison to any place I've ever been. Would recommend.

Took a tour with Crowded House. There’s a four hour drive to get there but the tour itself was fantastic. Our local guide was knowledgeable and very impartial. What came across was the insanity of war.

A must see for every Australian
