The Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque (Red Mosque) is an absolute must-see in Pettah. The iconic red-and-white candy-striped exterior is breathtaking, but the interior is equally impressive with its serene prayer halls and beautiful carved pillars. It is very well-organized for visitors: Tourists & Visitors: Use Gate No. 3 for entry and exit. Ladies: There is a dedicated entrance at Gate No. 5. It’s a peaceful escape from the hustle of the surrounding markets. Just remember to dress modestly out of respect. A true architectural gem in the heart of Colombo!

遠くからでもよく目立つかわいい色合いが特徴です。赤と白のボーダーが本当にかわいいです。玉ねぎのようなイスラム建築独特のドームやタイルの模様も全部がかわいい。 １日に4回ほど中に入って見学できるツアーがあります。無料で行っていますが、時間によっては当日当然やらなかったり、早めに締め切ってしまったりまちまち。少し早めの時間を目指していくといいかもしれません。観光客用の入り口に時間が書いてあるので、それを確認してから次の予定を決めてもいいかも。

The Red Mosque, also known as Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, is one of the most striking landmarks in Colombo. I only admired the mosque from the outside, but the architecture alone is truly impressive. The bold red and white patterns, combined with its unique design, make the mosque stand out beautifully among the surrounding buildings. It looks elegant, grand, and very photogenic. Even from the exterior, you can appreciate the craftsmanship and the distinctive character of this historic mosque. A wonderful place to stop by, take photos, and admire one of Colombo’s most iconic architectural landmarks.

I visited the Red Mosque (Jami Ul-Alfar Masjid) around 7 PM. Visitor entry normally closes around 6 PM, but we were allowed since we came for Isha namaz. The female prayer area is located on the upper floors, and I entered through the visitor gate instead of the main prayer gate. The mosque is absolutely beautiful, blending its historic architecture with modern facilities. The prayer area inside is large, calm, and well-maintained. The mosque is located right inside the famous Pettah Market, one of the busiest and most vibrant areas in Colombo. During the daytime, many non-Muslim tourists and visitors also come here to admire the architecture and take photos. The Red Mosque, also known as Jami Ul-Alfar Masjid, was built in 1908 and is one of Colombo’s oldest and most recognizable landmarks. Its unique red-and-white candy-stripe design makes it stand out among the narrow, lively streets of Pettah. Historically, it served as a key landmark for sailors arriving at the Colombo port, who used this mosque’s minarets as a visual guide. Today, it continues to be an active place of worship while also attracting thousands of visitors due to its stunning architecture and cultural significance. Overall, a wonderful spiritual and cultural experience. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Colombo!

Für mich mein schönstes Erlebnis in Colombo, auch wenn ich Colombo am wenigsten mochte in Sri Lanka. Aber diese Moschee ist allemal ein Abstecher wert, es gibt Zeiten zu denen man als Tourist die Moschee betreten darf. Der Eintritt und die Führung sind kostenlos, informativ und das Highlight: das Dach mit einer guten Aussicht über Colombo, find die Stadt halt nicht so toll, deshalb nur eine gute Aussicht. Das Innere war zwar sehr modern und muslimisch mit hübschen Teppichen, aber das Innere schafft es nicht mal in die Top 20 der schönsten Moscheen in denen ich je war, von außen macht sie deutlich mehr her. Man bekommt eine kostenlose Robe wenn man in kurzen Sachen erscheint.

每天 10:45 在 Gate 3 會有免費導覽 ⏰，導覽結束後可自由捐獻（週五不開放）。男女都可以進入參觀，進去前工作人員會發放合適的衣服，不用擔心穿著問題 👍。 導覽人員非常專業，解說清楚又有條理，會詳細介紹這座清真寺的歷史背景與建築特色。特別有趣的是，紅白相間的建築配色靈感來自石榴 ，聽完解說再看建築會更有感覺。 也會留時間讓大家拍照。 導覽最後需要爬不少樓梯一路上到頂樓，雖然有點累，但頂樓風景真的很美🌆，還可以看到蓮花塔，是非常值得。整體來說行程安排得很好，強烈建議先確認導覽時間再來參觀，才不會錯過這麼棒的免費導覽！

A truly beautiful and historic architectural building in the heart of Pettah, Colombo. This was built in 1908 by Indian craftsmen and whats unique is the red-and-white candy-striped design. Visitors have a separate entrance, and there’s no entry fee. Inside, there is a free guided tour by staff (note that outside guides are not allowed). Be sure to dress modestly — ladies are provided with a gown at the entrance and everyone needs to remove their shoes or slippers before entering. A shoe rack is available for convenience. There are six floors and if you make it to the rooftop, you’ll be treated to a great view of Colombo’s skyline, including cargo ships at the port and the Nelum Kuluna Tower in the distance. A peaceful and respectful place to visit, rich in culture and history — definitely worth a stop if you’re exploring Colombo!

2026年2月28日（土）訪問 （ラマダン中） 11時前に到着し、No.3入口に列があったため並びました。 よく分からないのですがラマダン期間中は、見学者は1日20名（5組）までとのこと？ ラマダン中に見学を希望する場合は、10:30頃までに並ぶのが無難かも。 今回は定員を超えていましたが、ご厚意で1階のみ約5分間見学させていただきました。 チップを求められることはありませんでした。 友人はスカーフを持参していませんでしたが入場は可能でした。ただ髪を覆わずに写真撮影するのは不可とのことです。 周辺ではタクシーの客引きに「ラマダン中なので12:30から開く」「近くで祭りがあるから観光しよう、1時間10ドル」などと声をかけられました。かなりしつこいですが無視しましょう。

One of the beautiful mosque in Sri Lanka. It’s called red mosque Bcs of this mosque red bricks . They have a separate entrance for tourists. We waited there, and a young imam came. He guide us for visiting this mosque with history and Islamic knowledge. He’s English is very good. From the roof of this mosque you can see the Colombo fort.

A must-visit in Colombo. The famous red and white architecture is stunning in person, but the real highlight is the peaceful, spiritual feeling inside. You can really appreciate the history and how incredibly well preserved this beautiful mosque is. It's a true oasis of calm in the middle of the busy Pettah market. An amazing spiritual experience.

紅白清真寺，位在貝塔市場內，車子停在中央火車站之後走過去大約10分鐘就可以抵達。 由於在市場內，巷子內人車都非常多，要小心貴重物品。 當時大約下午四點半抵達，非信徒有一個側門可以出入，裡面有個服務人員。服務人員說等10分鐘可以入場，但入場的時候已經五點了。感覺是要等上一批入場參觀的遊客都離開後才會開放下批遊客進場。一次開放入場大約15~20名遊客。 進場一定要脫鞋，女生一定要穿罩袍，男生穿短褲或無袖才要穿罩袍。 開放進場之後原本以為會有導覽或是講解，但什麼都沒有，只有一個看起來像住持的慢慢把我們帶頂樓。中間要拍照都可以，住持也不會阻止。 到了頂樓搭配夕陽很美麗，是個適合拍照的地方。 這時住持會來詢問說可不可以為紅白清真寺捐獻一些錢，可以捐可以不捐。 整體而言蠻值得來拍照跟欣賞建築，但時間要抓的寬裕一點，沒辦法預約所以等待時間可能也會比較長。

The people there were incredibly kind, they provided an abaya for my wife and helped her enter the mosque comfortably. The interior of the building is absolutely stunning and beautifully designed. I definitely recommend visiting.

Al wandelend vanuit het hotel op stap gegaan. Naar de 'Rode Moskee'. Ineens, na het omslaan van een hoek sta je er voor. Héél erg mooi, apart, bijzonder die rode kleur. In die drukke wijk. Jammer dat de Moskee pas een tijdje later open zou gaan voor algemeen publiek. Zoveel tijd hadden we niet. Maar de buitenkant is ook al geweldig in combinatie met de ligging in de Pettah wijk. Niet veel tijd in Colombo? Hier zeker even naar toe‼️

2026年2月14日土に訪問。レッドモスク。着いたら、10:30amまで、ビジター用のGate 3の中で待機。靴を脱ぐ。女性で半袖の方は無料で衣装を貸し出し。中に入ると、写真はOKのようだ。1〜2階をある程度見た後に、最上階に行く。最初に『入場料はいらないが、チップをあげてね』とみんなに言う。最上階から出る時にチップは回収され、1000ルピー必要とのこと。案内してくれる人の解説はないし、(最初に若干言われたとはいえ)チップの請求の仕方は若干いやらしい感じ。ここに行くためにコロンボ観光する必要はないが、個人的には、時間があるなら行っても良いと思う。外から写真を撮るだけでも十分かもしれない。なお、見学が終わって出たら、Gate 3の前に、1:30pmからという張り紙が貼ってあった。次の見学はその時間からということだろう。
