Jungle Beach is a true hidden gem! It’s a bit of a hike through the woods to get there, but the crystal-clear water and golden sand make it totally worth it. The bay is quite small and secluded, which makes it perfect for snorkeling or a peaceful swim away from the main Unawatuna crowds. There's a small shack for snacks and drinks, but the real highlight is the stunning natural beauty and the calm waves. A must-visit if you're in the South

Hello fellow beachcombers! As a local guide with a deep appreciation for the Southern Coast's natural beauty, I’m excited to share my recent, truly amazing experience at Unawatuna’s Jungle Beach. Just yesterday, six of us took a day trip to this beautiful, secluded cove, and it was the perfect dose of nature, adventure, and history. The journey began with the classic Sri Lankan bus ride—affordable, lively, and a genuine slice of local life. From the main road, the walk to the beach is officially about 1.7 km. For anyone seeking an authentic, challenging experience with rewarding jungle sights, I absolutely recommend walking. Be prepared, though: it’s a steep climb, as you're traversing a hill. However, we decided to save our energy for the swim and hailed a three-wheeler (tuk-tuk) via the 'Pick Me' app. This was the smart move! The tuk-tuk driver skillfully navigated the narrow, winding, and seriously steep incline, delivering us to the top in comfort. It proved to be a far more practical choice for a group, leaving us refreshed and ready to explore. 🕊️ The Peak of Peace: Rumassala Pagoda The reward for the ascent is the stunning Japanese Peace Pagoda atop Rumassala Hill. This gleaming white stupa is not just a photographic landmark but a powerful symbol of global harmony. I was curious about its history, and I can now confirm my suspicion: it was built by the Japanese Buddhist order, Nipponzan Myōhōji, and opened on February 23, 2004, shortly before the Tsunami. Another source states the construction was completed in 2005. Regardless, the structure became a beacon of resilience as it overlooked the coastline devastated by the December 2004 Tsunami. It’s a testament to peace and a reminder of the island’s incredible strength in the face of tragedy. The vantage point from the pagoda offers a 360-degree view that is simply unforgettable. You can see the entire arc of Unawatuna Bay, the dense green canopy of Rumassala, and the majestic Galle Fort in the distance. It’s a necessary stop for reflection and stunning panoramic photos before starting the final leg of the journey. 💧 The Beach: Crystal Clear Tranquility From the Pagoda, the path descends steeply through the shade of the forest towards the secluded bay. This downward walk is easier but just as scenic. Finally, you emerge onto Jungle Beach. What defines this beach is its incredible calmness. Tucked away in a cove, the waters are protected, making it one of the absolute best spots for swimming in the area. The water is startlingly clear, warm, and inviting. You can easily swim as far as you like in a safe, tranquil environment. We spent several glorious hours here, alternating between floating in the sea and relaxing on the golden sand. We captured plenty of photos of the pristine cove and its lush backdrop before heading back. The beach itself is rustic—a few local shacks offer simple refreshments, but it has thankfully retained its untouched, natural charm. This spot is a sanctuary, perfect for those who prioritize nature and tranquility over crowded tourist facilities. Final Recommendation: Jungle Beach is a highly rewarding mini-adventure. The journey via tuk-tuk or on foot, the historical pause at the Peace Pagoda, and the ultimate reward of a calm, clear bay make it an experience I urge all visitors to enjoy. It perfectly encapsulates the serene beauty of Unawatuna

Beautiful location with an amazing view of the sea. The beach offers a calm and relaxing atmosphere, but you must be careful when bathing as the water can be unpredictable. The natural beauty of the place is affected by the waste left behind by some local visitors. Bottles, cans, and other garbage have made the area quite dirty. Anyone visiting should respect the environment, enjoy the beauty, and take back everything they bring. This helps protect the beach for everyone.

Jungle Beach in Unawatuna is a "hidden gem" that has become a must-visit, offering a more rugged, natural alternative to the main Unawatuna beach. Here is a review based on the current 2026 visitor experience. The Vibe Tucked away at the base of the Rumassala Hill, Jungle Beach lives up to its name. To reach it, you usually take a short, slightly steep hike through lush forest (often spotting monkeys and peacocks along the way). It feels like a tropical oasis, with golden sand enclosed by dense green jungle and large rocky outcrops. The Highlights • Ideal Swimming: The bay is protected by a coral reef, creating a natural lagoon with calm, turquoise water. It is much safer for swimming and snorkeling than the open ocean. • Snorkeling: While the reef has seen better days, it is still one of the best accessible spots in the area to see colorful fish and the occasional sea turtle right off the shore. • Double Beaches: There are actually two small bays. The first is more popular and has a small shack for drinks/snacks; the second is a short walk over the rocks and is typically much quieter. • Nearby Attractions: You can easily combine a beach day with a visit to the Japanese Peace Pagoda, which is just a short walk up the hill and offers panoramic views of the Galle coastline. The Drawbacks • Crowds: No longer a "secret," it can get very crowded on weekends and during peak season (December–March). • Limited Facilities: Infrastructure is minimal. There are basic toilets and a small cafe, but don't expect the luxury beach clubs found on the main Unawatuna strip. • Monkeys: The local macaques are bold! If you leave food unattended on your towel while swimming, they will grab it.

Stunning little beach tucked away at the base of Rumassala Hill. The water is calm, clear, and perfect for snorkeling right off the shore. It does get crowded during the day, so go early to have the place to yourself. Wear good shoes for the trail and bring a mask for the fish!

Lots of trash in the overall dirty water. The beach by itself + the restaurant is really nice though. See photos. Relaxing. Just follow the restaurant signs and you will be there. Take the first entrance through the fence. There are two entrances for two separate parts of the beach. Ask locals nearby.

A long walk up and down from hilltop for something you can get at Unawattuna beach. A little quieter and pretty. BUT you will be ripped off by Tuk tuk drivers who run a cartel charging 1300-1500 lkr for rides back. Other drivers in the town won't respond or cancel. BEWARE . If you must go get a taxi back,800-1000

Jungle Beach in Unawatuna is an absolute hidden gem! Tucked away behind a lush green forest, getting there feels like a small adventure. Once you arrive, it’s completely worth it. The beach is stunning, with clear turquoise water, soft golden sand, and a peaceful atmosphere that feels far removed from the crowds. It’s a perfect spot for swimming, snorkeling, or simply relaxing under the shade of the trees while listening to the sound of the waves. The water is calm and crystal clear, often allowing you to see colorful fish right near the shore. What makes Jungle Beach so special is its balance of seclusion and natural beauty. It’s a little piece of paradise surrounded by nature, ideal for anyone looking for tranquility and breathtaking scenery. Definitely one of the most beautiful and memorable beaches in the Unawatuna area!

Jungle Beach is a little hidden paradise. Tucked away from the crowds, it may not be the easiest place to reach—the access is a bit tricky—but that’s exactly what makes it so special. Once you arrive, you’re rewarded with a small, intimate beach surrounded by lush greenery and crystal waters. There’s a tiny restaurant and a coconut shop right on the sand, perfect for grabbing a fresh drink or a quick bite while you relax. The vibe is peaceful, natural, and unspoiled—ideal for spending a few hours swimming, sunbathing, or just soaking in the atmosphere. It’s not about luxury here, but about simplicity and raw beauty. Jungle Beach is proof that sometimes the best treasures are the ones hidden off the beaten path.

Endroit magnifique, cadre idyllique?

Viele Juice Bars.

The beach is filthy, covered in litter, plastics bags wrap around your legs in the water. People relax on daybeds taking up most of the sand, surrounded by garbage, disappointing. Most of it is probably washed up from elsewhere, refuse plastic shopping bags whenever you can so they don't end up as trash on the beaches or strangling the marine life.

The place is a dump. Trash everywhere. They clean the beach by dumping the trash among the trees. Horrible smell as well. Snorkeling is bad as the visibility is very poor. You see 50cm ahead, if that. The reefs are destroyed. Don’t go here.

We were reluctant to come here due to the previous poor reviews but thought we would check it out and make our own minds up first. Here now. Bit of a rocky walk down from the road and a few small monkeys so hold onto your bags but they do just watch you walking by. Beach is amazing. Really calm and great for snorkelling. Great atmosphere. Free sun beds if you buy something, we bought vodka and Coke Zero 👍🍹. Beautiful view over the Galle bay. Def one to check out ❤️
