Small but extremely organized airport. Everything went smoothly on arrival and departure. You can also get a visa upon arrival without issues.

Il piccolo aeroporto ai piedi del Kilimanjaro. È semplice e spartano e dobbiamo raggiungere l'aereo a piedi.

Kilimanjaro Airport is where African hospitality ends and dies a slow painful tortured death. Passing through this airport is an absolute procedural nightmare. All I can say is - come at least 2-3 hours before your flight. It begins with the unnecessarily extensive x-ray at the entrance (where you have to remove your shoes). Security yells at you if you use the boxes for bags or shoes - God knows why. If that wasn't enough inconvenience, there is an additional document check (with only 1 person manning the counter) BEFORE they allow you to check in, and if you aren't from a common country like the US or UK, they have no idea what documents are needed resulting in an unnecessarily long interrogation about pointless things like "where is your e-ticket?" (When you already have a boarding pass). It really should not be that difficult for a citizen to return to their own country! Then there's immigration. Which is relatively smooth, largely because they have pushed the entirety of their work to the 1 person doing document checks prior to check in. This is a pro tip on how government officials meet their efficiency metrics: by pushing the red tape to someone else further up the line. After that, security check number 2! Where you have to take off your shoes AGAIN! Absolutely demented to make passengers do this twice. Even the US has ended the requirement for passengers to remove shoes at airport security checkpoints. There is no reason for this, let alone making people do it twice. Food and duty free shopping are decent for such a small airport. Probably the only saving grace for this facility.

This airport is terrible! Service is extremely poor, the security belt is so dirty that it turned my neck pillow black right away. I was cleaning the stain in the restroom when a staff grabbed it and wiped it badly. Then she held out $1 straight for a tip without doing anything at all. All staff are rude, and the customs officers were just chatting instead of working.

Good Airport. But short on staff. You will have problems of congestion if you have many flights leaving at the same time. Very clean runway area. Added bonus: you get to walk to the plane.

I recently had the opportunity to travel through Kilimanjaro International Airport in Tanzania, and I wanted to share a brief review based on my experience. Arrival Experience: When I arrived at JRO, the first thing I noticed was the beautiful view of Mount Kilimanjaro on the way in—it’s a stunning sight that sets the tone for your Tanzanian adventure. The immigration process, however, was a bit slow. As someone arriving without a visa, I had to go through several steps: making the visa fee payment, getting my photo taken, and then fingerprinting. It took close to an hour, which is something to keep in mind if you're arriving during a busy period. I’d recommend applying for a visa in advance if possible, just to save time and avoid the queues. Facilities & Amenities: The airport is relatively small but well-organized. It was clean, and basic amenities were available, including free Wi-Fi and a few charging points. After a long flight, this was definitely appreciated. There are restaurants and shops inside the terminal where you can grab a snack or buy souvenirs, though the variety is somewhat limited. For those with long layovers or who prefer extra comfort, there are lounges like the Twiga and Tanzanite lounges. I didn’t personally use them this time, but I’ve heard they offer food, drinks, showers, and a more relaxed atmosphere. Staff & Service: The airline staff and immigration officers were professional, though not particularly warm. Some travelers might find the staff a bit indifferent, but I didn’t face any major issues. Directions and signage in the terminal are fairly simple, so it's easy to find your way. Departure Experience: During departure, I made sure to arrive a few hours early, which turned out to be a good decision. The check-in process was a bit disorganized due to multiple flights leaving around the same time. Security screening was straightforward, but the waiting area near the gates did get crowded. I’d suggest finding a seat early if you’re flying economy. Once inside the terminal, there are a few options for food and shopping, including local crafts and duty-free items. Be prepared for higher prices than what you'd find in town, as is common in most airports. Transportation: Getting to and from the airport is relatively easy. Taxis and hotel shuttles are readily available, especially to places like Arusha and Moshi. I arranged a transfer through my hotel ahead of time, which went smoothly and took about an hour to reach Arusha city. Final Impressions: Overall, Kilimanjaro International Airport is functional and safe, with the essentials covered for travelers. It may not be the most modern or efficient airport, but it does its job well as a gateway to one of the most beautiful regions in Africa. With a bit of patience and preparation, your experience here can be a pleasant one.

Though small, the airport boasts a steady flow of traffic, providing a lively atmosphere. The spacious duty-free shop offers plenty of choices for travelers looking to pick up souvenirs or last-minute items before their journey. A charming café is available, perfect for unwinding and enjoying a moment of relaxation before departure. The airport itself is well-kept, with clean facilities that reflect a commitment to maintenance. However, it's important to note that accessibility could be a concern, as the premises are not equipped for wheelchair access. Strategically located midway between Arusha and Moshi, this airport serves as a convenient gateway between the two cities, making it an ideal stop for travelers in the region.

Wirklich ganz schrecklich. Kein System. Selbst ein Stern ist noch zu viel.

TRAVELER TIP: Bring 20 USD cash to stop at Vodacom mpesa, located 100m outside the airport but still within the airport area. Get a simcard for 2 USD and 25GB data for 20 USD. Excellent coverage throughout Tanzania, limited only in Serengeti. Huge plus: use mpesa for money transfers and cash withdrawals at competitive rates everywhere. Link it to your bank account via money transfer apps (I used World Remit) app. Highly recommended! Enjoyed a nice cappuccino for 6000 TZS or about 2.50 USD and a well-prepared omelette with toast for 8000 TZS or about 3 USD before my flight. The terminal is spacious and comfortable, not crowded, with friendly and attentive staff. Security screening was fast and efficient. Flew to Mwanza with Precision Air - 1.5 hours for 70 USD or 175,000 TZS. Most locals take the bus for 4-5 USD or 10,000-12,500 TZS, but that’s 12 hours with serious safety concerns, accidents occur regularly. My recommendation: if your budget allows, fly with Precision Air. They’ve proven most reliable with minimal delays.

I applied online for a Tanzania visa on January 29th, and the status showed “application in progress” for 3 weeks despite emailing the embassy twice. Upon arrival, a passport control officer told me my application was still pending and gave me the option to wait a couple of hours to contact the embassy or pay $50 for a visa on the spot. Due to exhaustion, I paid $50 and was not given a receipt, which raised concerns about where the payment was recorded. Shortly after, I checked my email and saw confirmation that my visa had actually been approved while I was on my flight—just 5 hours before my arrival. This suggests that although my visa had been approved in the system, I was still told it was pending and charged $50. The online visa system clearly needs improvement. It was very disappointing to experience this situation as a tourist upon arrival in an otherwise beautiful country. Other airport staff were polite and welcoming.

A very clean, small airport with quick, efficient staff. I just flew domestically, but the domestic flights section was extremely nice and neat and new (not always the case in domestic vs international terminals). There is one waiting area with lots of seats, a small souvenir shop with loads of books, and a cafe/restaurant. There are bathrooms downstairs that are very nice. The only issue was no AC, so be prepared for that.
