Architecture & History
The Red Fort is a massive, breath-taking structure built from red sandstone and surrounded by a moat that is about 10 feet deep. You enter from the side of the main front facade, stepping directly into history. It is a surreal experience to physically stand in the places you have only read about in textbooks, like the Diwan-e-Aam (Hall of Public Audience), Diwan-e-Khaas (Hall of Private Audience), and the famous Chhatta Chowk.
Tickets & Exploration
When I visited in 2022, the entry fee was around ₹70 for Indians and ₹700 for foreign tourists, though I was lucky enough to get a free entry on the day of my first visit. You are allowed to roam freely across almost the entire interior of the fort. There are no guards constantly watching your every move, which gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace—though visitors should absolutely maintain the decorum and respect the site commands.
Shopping, Dining & Attractions
Inside, right near Chhatta Chowk, there is a vibrant market where you can buy jewellery, souvenirs, and food items. If you want to sit down for a meal, there are restaurants inside the premises. There is also a museum on site that is well worth checking out.
Facilities
Basic amenities are well sorted here. Both public toilets and drinking water are readily available, making it easy to spend a few hours exploring.
Best Time to Visit
This is a year-round destination. Whether you visit on a sunny winter afternoon, a summer day, or even during the rain, the fort holds its charm. If you can, try to be there as the sun sets—the monument looks absolutely marvellous when the night falls and the architectural lights are turned on.
