Masjid Maryam Zamani also known as Jodha Bai's Mosque The 400-year-old historic Begum Shahi Mosque, also known as "Masjid" Maryam Zamani Begum, is located in the illegally constructed tire market inside the "Masti Gate" in the inner city of Lahore. Due to lack of awareness, ignorance and immense encroachments, most of the citizens of Lahore are also unaware of this masterpiece of architecture. This mosque was built between 1611 and 1614 during the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir in honor of his mother Begum Maryam Zamani. This is the same Maryam Zamani who was a Hindu woman and the queen of Mughal Emperor Akbar. She is also known as Maharani Jodha Bai in history. Three stairs are taken down to enter the mosque. There are also some ancient tombs in the premises of the mosque. If you look at the mosque from the courtyard in front, your eyes are immediately stunned. Three domes above the roof of the verandah seem to be trying unsuccessfully to hide their glory in this small corner. There is a pond for ablution in the courtyard of the mosque, which is covered with a roof.

This is so beautiful and masterpiece of mughal architecture but unfortunately this most loss its beauty due to encroachment. And extra construction in the lawn of this mosque. I love this mosque wall fresco even if we touch the wall fresco we can feel each design each curve. Now a days mosque condition is so bad but archeological department has started restoration work that is continue. I recommend to everyone please visit this mosque and enjoy calmness of this mosque.

1975 Maryam Zamani Mosque also known as Begum Shahi Masjid is located on eastern side of the Lahore Fort. Maryam Zamani Begum was mother of Mughal Emperor Noor-ud-din Jahangir.  This mosque is one of the earliest mosques of Mughal era, constructed under the orders and royal patronage of Emperor Jahangir from 1611-1614 AD.  The mosque is simple and graceful massive structure, richly decorated with fresco paintings in geometrical, floral and tendril designs. The main prayer chamber with its five arched openings, the central one as usual large framed and provided with a half dome, opened into a courtyard with an ablution tank in its center. The architectural plan and its decorative details especially its fresco paintings and calligraphy akes this mosque one of the more eminent Mughal monument.

Begum Shahi Mosque, officially The Mosque of Mariyam Zamani Begum, is an early 17th-century mosque situated in the Walled City of Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. The mosque was built between 1611 and 1614 during the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir in honor of his mother. It is one of Lahore's earliest surviving examples of a Mughal-era mosque and influenced the construction of the larger Wazir Khan Mosque a few decades later. The mosque has been encroached upon by several shops, and views of the mosque from the Akbari Gate of the Lahore Fort have been obstructed by illegally constructed tire shops. In July 2016, the Walled City of Lahore Authority announced that the shops would be removed, and the mosque would also be conserved and restored.BackgroundThe mosque was built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir in honor of his mother, Begum Mariyam Zamani, who was also known as 'Maharani Jodha Bai'. Mariyam Zamani was also a wife of the Mughal Emperor, Akbar.LocationThe mosque is located inside the old Masti Gate in the Walled City of Lahore.HistoryConstruction began in 1611 and lasted until 1614. The Mosque of Mariyam Zamani was temporarily turned into a gunpowder factory by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, for which it was then known as Barudkhana Wali Masjid ("Gunpowder Mosque"). In 1850 the mosque was returned to the Muslims of Lahore who was able to contribute to its renovation.

Rating as 5/5 due to the mosque but authorities needs to work on the restoration of this dying beauty. One of the oldest Mosques of Lahore but unfortunately, in a pathetic condition. It has two names 1)Maryam Zamani Mosque 2)Begum Shahi Mosque. Initially it was built by Mughal king for all sects of Islam but after few centuries, Shiites, Salafists & Ahmadi were banned by administration of Mosque & only Hanfi Sunni were allowed to perform prayers. This nonsense was quite rare & still, such narrow mindset is rare in Pakistan. Anyway, Ranjit Singh changed this mosque into powder gun factory & when British came, Mosque was handed over to Sunni Muslims. Still today, Mosque is functional. It's hard to locate due to Encroachments.

Marriam Zamani was the Muslim name of Jodha Bai (the consort of Emperor Akbar). Though she didn't convert to Muslim but still she had a Muslim name (Marriam Zamani) and this lovely mosque was built on her name.

Maryam Zamani Mosque: The Hidden Gem of Lahore Sitting under a marvellous dome like this, in complete silence, one is momentarily separated from the perpetual worries and hectic pace of daily life. There is a sense of peace here that is not found anywhere else in the city. However, most parts of this historic mosque are in a terrible condition: they are crumbling and fading away, or worse, being painted over. The diminishing reality of these structures is heartbreaking, but it makes you realize the role which power, funding, and priorities can play. The place in question is Maryam Zamani Mosque, in Old Lahore. It is one of the oldest and most significant Mughal monuments in the subcontinent. But it is not as well known as the other Mughal buildings and is easily overlooked since it is surrounded by a dense bazaar. Although it has three entrances, you could very easily pass by all of them, without realizing the gem hidden within those walls.

The mosque built in 1614 by Maryam Zamani, also known as Jodha Bhai, Hindu wife of Akbar and mother of Jahangir, stands as a historical testament near the eastern gate of Lahore Fort. This architectural marvel served both fort residents and city dwellers alike. Its design is noted for blending Pathan and Mughal architectural styles, marking a transitional phase. Over time, the mosque has faced significant encroachment from all sides except the west. Originally adorned with three inscriptions, only one remains legible today, reflecting its gradual decline. The mosque was once richly adorned with frescos, distinct from those found in other monuments, but sadly, these artworks are now in a state of severe disrepair. Despite its current condition, Maryam Zamani Mosque remains a poignant symbol of cultural fusion and historical continuity in Lahore. It preserves the architectural legacy of its time, showcasing the intricate craftsmanship and stylistic evolution from the Pathans to the Mughals. As a spiritual and communal hub, it continues to resonate with the echoes of its storied past, inviting contemplation of the rich heritage of the Mughal era in South Asia.

The Maryam Zamani Mosque is named after Queen Maryam Zamani, the wife of Emperor Akbar. It is the earliest surviving Mughal mosque in Lahore and is the first to exhibit the five-bay facade that would become typical of nearly all future mosques built by the Mughals. It is a comparatively small structure, measuring just 50 meters east-west and 50 meters north-south. Often called Begum Shahi Masjid, the mosque stands just opposite the Masjidi Gate of the Lahore fort.

It is a small mosque but is masterpiece of Mughal architecture. Unlike Badshahi Mosque it is poorly maintained. It is one of the oldest Mughal mosques in Lahore. It is named after King Akbar’s Rajpoot wife Manmati, titled of 'Maryam-i-Zamani'. It was built in 1611 opposite Masti Gate then called Masjidy Gate. There is no parking space nearby and the visiters have to park outside Mastigate and go to mosque on foot. No one will guide you about the way to mosque, instead ask for Masti Gate.

Wonderful piece of architecture forlorn by sheer negligence. Quietly characterized by those floral patterns, intricate designs, calligraphic mosaics, etc. Work for renovation is underway but still there is much to be done as of yet.

100 yards outside the East or Masti (Masjidi) Gate of Lahore fort stands the oldest dated mosque in the city, founded, as an inscription on the north entrance records, by Maryam Zamani, mother of the emperor Jahangir, in A.D. 1614. Architecturally Maryam Zamani Mosque is of severe and early design; the five arches of the prayer chamber have simple four-centred heads, the central arch under the usual tall framing-arch, which is also four-centred and has a half-dome ornamented with interlaced ribbing. The building has three flat domes, and at each corner of its facade are square towers carrying small cupolas on octagonal drums, whilst two equivalent turrets with cupolas rise from the roof at the back corners. Internally, the central dome has interlaced ribbing or tracery and honeycombed squinches, whilst the side-domes have interlaced pendentives. The building of Maryam Zamani Mosque would be of little note but for the paintings with which the walls of the interior are covered. These paintings are, however, unrivalled in Pakistan, and perhaps in India, for their delicacy and lively variety, and for their harmonious golden tone which is due only in part to age. The panels include flowerpots, cypresses, palms and other trees, and a miscellany of flower-designs, partly framed in elaborate geometrical patterns. Compared with the relatively coarse and indifferent brushwork on Lahore monuments of the second quarter of the century, these are of outstanding beauty and distinction. Maryam Zamani Mosque would appear that the liberal use of mosaic tile work under Janhangir’s successor, Shahjahan, induced or at least coincided with decay in the quality of wall-painting, but at the date of the present mosque the rival technique had scarcely yet appeared at Lahore.
