Templo Mayor is an unforgettable experience and one of the most impressive historic sites in Mexico City. Walking through the ruins right in the heart of Centro Histórico feels surreal — you’re surrounded by modern buildings, yet standing inside the remains of the Aztec capital. The layout is easy to follow, and the signage gives just enough context without overwhelming you. The museum is excellent and beautifully curated, with artifacts that bring the entire site to life. Seeing the ruins from street level is one thing, but walking the actual pathways and then exploring the museum gives you a completely different appreciation for the history. The location is perfect, right beside the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the entrance on Calle Seminario is straightforward once you know where to go. The entire visit felt organized, calm, and incredibly meaningful. A must‑see for anyone visiting Mexico City.

Museo de Templo Mayor was by far one of the biggest highlights from my two weeks in Mexico City and the surrounding sites. This place is unlike any other museum in CDMX. The old Aztec ruins that were discovered here show the true breadth of history Mexico City has. The energy here is potent and powerful. Tune in and see what you feel for yourself. I thought this museum was leagues above and beyond the Anthropology Museum. If you want to go to one historical museum in CDMX - make it this one hands down.

Visted in May 2026. Do you like Aztec/Mesoamerica history, architecture, or archeology? If so, this place is a must visit. Truly reveals the layered story of the Aztec civilization and how it's buried beneath the modern city. Alot of cool artifacts, intriguing exhibits for all ages. If you read all the signage, it takes about 1 hour to really absorb everything.

Templo Mayor is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Mexico City and offers an incredible glimpse into the heart of the ancient Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan. Located right next to the Metropolitan Cathedral in the historic center, the site reveals the remains of the main temple that once stood at the center of the Aztec world. Walking through the ruins, it is amazing to see how layers of history have been uncovered, with different stages of the temple’s construction visible as the Aztec empire expanded. Informational displays help visitors understand the religious and cultural importance of the temple, which was dedicated primarily to the gods Huitzilopochtli and Tlaloc. The adjacent museum is also excellent, displaying many artifacts discovered during excavations, including sculptures, ceremonial objects, and offerings that tell the story of Aztec life and beliefs. Visiting Templo Mayor provides a powerful contrast between ancient and modern Mexico, as the ruins stand surrounded by the busy streets and historic buildings of downtown Mexico City.

Very interesting place from a historical standpoint. The temple structure is largely destroyed unfortunately, and it’s clear that ground settlement is taking a further toll. But it is cool that you can walk over/around it (on sidewalks with railing), unlike some other sites. The indoor portion of the museum is quite interesting, you could probably spend 1 - 1.5 hours there and cover it well. It’s basically designed with a routed layout where you can walk through and cover everything in order, which I found helpful. If I had to choose, I would choose Anthropology Museum over Templo Mayor, but hopefully you have time for both.

Gorgeous, well presented museum. All guests should know before entering that water is not allowed, in order to see the exhibits you must walk through the boiling sun for twenty minutes, there are no water fountains or other ways to re-hydrate after walking through the sun for at least two city blocks. So, if you are someone who has physical limitations that make you need water or to stay out of the sun, this unique world class museum is inaccessible to you.

If you're in Mexico City and only do one historical site, make it this one. Standing in the middle of the Templo Mayor archaeological zone while surrounded on all sides by modern buildings, honking traffic, and 21st-century life is one of the most surreal experiences I've ever had. You're literally looking at the beating heart of the Aztec empire—where human sacrifices took place on a massive scale—while the Catedral Metropolitana looms right behind you and people are eating tacos al pastor 50 meters away. The contrast is unreal. The ruins themselves are impressive: the layered pyramids (they kept building bigger versions on top of the old ones), the enormous serpent heads, the Chac Mool, the eagle warrior pieces, the tzompantli (skull rack) foundations. The museum attached to the site is legitimately world-class—far better than I expected—with incredible stonework, jewelry, obsidian knives, and the massive Coyolxauhqui stone disc that still gives you chills when you see it in person. Tips if you're going: - Get there right when it opens (9:00 AM) — crowds are much lighter and the light is beautiful. - The audio guide (or a good app) is worth it; there's a lot of symbolism most people walk right past. - Wear comfortable shoes — you do a fair amount of walking on uneven stone. - Combine it with the Templo Mayor museum + a walk through the Zócalo + Palacio Nacional murals in one morning/afternoon. Perfect half-day history hit. Yes it's "just ruins" compared to Teotihuacán's giant pyramids, but this is the actual center of the Mexica universe. Montezuma walked here. Cortés stood here. That matters. Must-visit if you're even slightly interested in pre-Columbian history. Easily one of my favorite archaeological sites in the world.

While the entrance price has gone up for foreign visitors (now 210 pesos per person), it was still worth a visit. Yes, you can see the ruins from outside for free. However, going inside allows you to view the descriptions and explanations (most of them have both English and Spanish notes). There are also exhibitions that show interesting collections, such as the marine and land animal offerings to gods, etc. We came around 1230pm on a Sunday and it wasn’t too crowded. When we came out around 2pm, there was a line. They search you throughly multiple times which could contribute to the wait time.

Visited Templo Mayor Museum and honestly it was one of the highlights of my trip. Seeing the Aztec ruins right in the middle of the city feels surreal, and the whole place is full of history. The museum is really well done, with tons of interesting artifacts that help you understand what life was like back then. I ended up spending way more time than expected just exploring everything. If you’re in Mexico City, this is an absolute must-see.

I have enjoyed many museums here in CDMX but this was not one of them!! They charge foreign tourists double 210 MXN which isn’t a problem if they would use some of that money to make more signs in English!! The artifacts which I can’t tell if they are real or replicas because so many were in perfect condition?? Some beautiful pieces but with little explanation in my language and I understand I am in a foreign country but this material needs explanation. How much of the archeological dig has been recreated? Which part is original?
