This huge place is beautifully designed and gardened. Graves and monuments are well kept. Not all the important graves are marked on Google Maps though, so we had to search a lot for a few. Searching was great, don’t get me wrong, because walking around such a great cemetery is a joy. It’s a very peaceful and interesting place to visit.

Susan Sontag 2. Jean-Paul Sartre & Simone de Beauvoir 3. Samuel Beckett 4. Guy de Maupassant 5.

Montparnasse Cemetery is far more than just a cemetery; it’s a journey through literary, philosophical and artistic history. Walking through its quiet paths feels like stepping into an open-air museum where some of the greatest minds of the last two centuries now rest. I came here especially to visit the grave of Charles Baudelaire, one of my favourite poets, but I was amazed to discover how many remarkable figures are buried here. Julio Cortázar, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Samuel Beckett, and many other writers, philosophers and artists are all buried within the cemetery, making it an unforgettable destination for anyone interested in literature or culture. One piece of advice: bring a map or use your phone’s GPS. Although many of the most famous graves are relatively close to one another, the cemetery is much larger than it first appears, and with thousands of tombstones it’s surprisingly easy to walk straight past the one you’re looking for. The atmosphere is peaceful, respectful and deeply moving. Whether you come because of Baudelaire, Cortázar, Sartre, Beauvoir or simply out of curiosity, this is one of those places in Paris that leaves a lasting impression. I would absolutely recommend taking your time here instead of rushing through—it is a place to reflect as much as to visit.

One of the largest, oldest cemeteries in Paris. Well worth the visit if you appreciate the historical aspect of human burial. It exemplifies human mortality and how it is dealt with in grand fashion.

I absolutely adored this cemetery almost entirely because of the notes and letters left at Beauvoir's tomb. Large scale, needs at least two hours. 5mins to metro

It's second largest cemetery in Paris. It's worth a visit when you're in the neighborhood. Make sure you study the map before venture in, especially you're looking for a famous celebrity.

I listened to the cemetery guard clicking to call a pigeon he was intent on feeding Susan Sontag, Samuel Becket, this graveyard is special for more than the famous people it holds. The tall thin mausoleums, the wrought iron doors and the stylish stone carvings. With limited time between connections from Gare Montparness and Charles De Gaulle flights, i managed a 30 min rest in the graveyard. It's clearly worthy of half day at a time. Bordered by street cafe's of varying quality but always delivering excellent people watching, Especially on a Saturday morning when the street market is in action

I didn’t know how many big and important people are buried here until I entered this place. It’s not fun but sometimes I enjoy walking in the cemeteries. Makes me a bit chill. This place is beautifully designed and gardened. Some graves are really special and some of them are scary. I’m from Iran and and I was shocked when I found out some of our old important politicians and artists are buried here. People like Shapour Bakhtiar, Ali Amini and Fereydoun Hoveyda are some examples. Completely worth a visit and a peaceful walk.
