One of the best museums I have visited! The National Museum of Oman is very well maintained and beautifully showcases the rich history and culture of the country. I would definitely recommend taking your time to explore the museum properly, as there is a lot to see and learn inside. The exhibits are very informative and the way everything is displayed makes the experience even more interesting. It was a very good visit overall and a must-visit place if you are in Muscat!

Oman’s history has been shaped by three steady forces: the sea, faith, and resilience. From early maritime trade routes linking East Africa, India, and Persia, to the rise of Omani dynasties and the deep imprint of Islam, Oman evolved as both a regional anchor and a natural bridge to the world. Its sailors, scholars, and statesmen built networks that extended well beyond the Arabian Peninsula. The National Museum of Oman reflects this layered identity with impressive clarity. The maritime galleries speak to Oman’s seafaring legacy, while the manuscripts and Qur’anic collections convey its intellectual and religious depth. Displays of diplomacy, weaponry, architecture, and craftsmanship reveal a culture that paired strength with refinement. What I appreciated most is the museum’s atmosphere. It is calm and spacious, with soft lighting and galleries that let you slow down. The dhow display instantly pulls you into Oman’s maritime soul, trade, travel, and outward movement. Then you turn a corner and find unexpected global echoes: samurai armor, a Portuguese ship model, quiet reminders that Oman’s story was never isolated. The manuscripts were a highlight for me: beautifully presented, with a sense of respect that makes you feel the scholarship behind them. Even the carved wooden screens add warmth and texture, grounding history in lived craft. This museum doesn’t present the past as fragments. It presents continuity, Oman as a nation shaped by openness, endurance, and cultural confidence.

National Museum of Oman is a well-designed and genuinely interesting stop, with a big free parking area right outside — perfect if you also want to walk over to Al Alam Palace afterwards. The museum is arranged around themes like “Land and People,” “The Glory of Islam,” and “Maritime History.” There’s no clear one-way route, so you can easily wander off track, but using the thematic sections helps you navigate. Plan for 1–2 hours depending on how deep you want to go. Nicely built, informative, and an easy add-on to a day in Old Muscat.

Amazing experience at the National Museum of Oman — and it’s free for students! They truly encourage students to learn history. It’s one of the most interactive museums I’ve visited in the Middle East, with colouring activities, puzzles, cooking recipes, historical movies, and even hands-on displays that visitors are allowed to touch and experience. I spent about two and a half hours exploring all the exhibitions. Even though it was almost closing time, the staff did not rush us to leave. I’m truly impressed! ✨

The National Museum of Oman offers a rich overview of the country’s heritage. From maritime history and distinctive forts and architecture to the story of frankincense, the exhibits cover almost everything a traveler should know before exploring Oman. It’s clear, well-organized, and a great first stop for visitors. However, for a national museum, there is relatively limited coverage of Ibadi Islam and the development of modern Oman’s politics, economy, and culture. The content feels more introductory than in-depth. Credit cards are accepted, and there is a café and gift shop inside. They also sell ice cream, including a unique frankincense flavor that’s worth trying. During my visit, there was a collaborative art event with Ukraine, and it was truly admirable to see them continuing to share their culture with the world despite the war.

My visit to the National Museum of Oman was an unforgettable experience by all accounts. From the moment I entered, I was captivated by the exquisite organization and meticulous attention to detail, reflecting a high level of professionalism and a genuine care for the visitor. The museum's architectural design seamlessly blends modernity and tradition, lending the place an aura of sophistication and beauty. Every corner of the museum tells a story from Oman's rich history, from ancient civilizations to the Islamic era and the modern renaissance. The exhibits are carefully arranged, and the lighting and facilities add an aesthetic dimension and a truly enjoyable visual experience. I highly recommend that everyone—citizens, residents, and visitors alike—not miss the opportunity to visit this magnificent cultural landmark. It is not just a museum, but a journey through time that allows you to explore Oman's rich heritage and discover its vibrant identity. 🌟 An experience worth repeating, and a place that inspires pride and a sense of belonging.

The National Museum of Oman features 14 themed exhibition halls, systematically showcasing Oman's development from prehistoric civilization to the present day. Covering themes such as "Land and People," "The Glory of Islam," and "Maritime History," the museum houses over 7,000 artifacts. Featured items include Omani daggers, such as the Sayidi dagger, featuring a rhino horn hilt, silver-threaded leather strap, and intricate decorative patterns.

I recently visited the National Museum of Oman. The museum was very clean, well-organized, and the staff at the entrance were extremely polite and welcoming. Considering the amount of entrance fee, I expected at least some guided support or visitor assistance during the experience. I also felt that each historical section could have benefited from appropriate ambient music to enhance the storytelling atmosphere, especially since the call to prayer was played repeatedly several times within a relatively short period. As a museum dedicated to history and cultural preservation, I believe it is important to remain committed to historical accuracy and internationally recognized terminology. It was surprising to see the term “Arabian Gulf” used in some informational materials, while the historically documented and globally recognized name is “Persian Gulf”, a name referenced in countless historical maps, academic sources, and even by institutions such as the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN). Overall, I believe the museum is worth visiting at least once, and I appreciate the effort invested in maintaining such an important cultural institution.

An excellent deep dive into Oman’s long, layered history and we’re talking thousands of years. Highlights that stuck with me: • Magan civilization (5000+ years ago) — Oman as a major copper trading hub. • Ancient oasis settlements (3000 years ago) showing early agricultural life. • The importance of frankincense, harvested from native trees and once traded across empires. • Islamic development around 1000 CE, including early mosques like those in the coastal city of Qalhat. • The Ya’aruba dynasty uniting tribes and pushing out Portuguese control while adopting some of their engineering techniques. • The Al Said dynasty, ruling for the last three centuries. • The modern Renaissance beginning in 1970, driven by oil and national modernization. Beautifully curated and very informative and great context for everything you see around the country.
