Pettah Floating Market in Colombo offers a calm and unique experience, especially at night. The place has a peaceful vibe with soft lighting reflecting on the water, creating a really relaxing atmosphere. We visited in the evening, and while most shops were closed, it was still a nice spot for a quiet walk and some beautiful night views. The walkways are clean, and the setting feels different from the busy streets nearby. It’s a great place to unwind, take photos, and enjoy a slower side of Colombo. Worth visiting if you’re around the area.

visited the Floating Market Pettah with my family about 10 years ago, when it felt more lively and engaging. Located beside Beira Lake, the concept of a market over water was refreshing and offered a welcome break from the crowded streets nearby. The walkways and open layout made it a pleasant place to explore at the time. On a recent visit, however, the atmosphere felt much quieter. Many shops were closed or had limited items, giving the area a slightly neglected feel rather than a vibrant market vibe. At times, the condition of the lake also affects the overall experience. Still, it’s not without value. If you enjoy calm surroundings, casual walks, or photography, it can be a nice stop—especially in the evening when the light softens and Colombo feels more relaxed.

Unfortunately not worth a visit. There are only a handful of restaurants open and that’s it. No floating-market at all… really a bummer, could be or maybe used to be nice! But at least you can get a good view of the Lotus Tower from here.

I found the "Floating Market" to be a significant letdown, as it bears almost no resemblance to an actual traditional market. Instead of a vibrant trading hub, it is essentially just a small collection of overpriced cafes, a few restaurants, and a handful of generic shops. The lack of variety and authentic atmosphere makes the visit feel hollow from the start. Sanitation and Environment: The most pressing issue is the appalling lack of hygiene and cleanliness. The facility is poorly maintained, and the water is visibly dirty, stagnant, and emits an unpleasant odor. It is genuinely pathetic to see such a lack of basic upkeep in a public space. Safety and Security Concerns: The environment feels increasingly uneasy due to the high presence of beggars and homeless individuals roaming the area. This creates a palpable sense of insecurity, especially if you are visiting in a small group or alone. I would strongly advise against visiting unless you are there during peak hours when the crowds are thick. The Only Way to Visit: If you must go, wait until the evening when the artificial lighting is turned on, as it manages to hide some of the grime and gives the place a better aesthetic. However, outside of those "golden hours" and the presence of a large public crowd, there is absolutely nothing of value to see here. I would recommend looking elsewhere for a true market experience.

This is a must see if you really want to experience the hustle and bustle of Colombo. A hive of activity that touches all the senses. The crowds and noise are exhilarating. It was also so lovely to be immersed in the experience without worrying about safety and security as is often the case in busy market areas.

The place is all hype! Most of the shops don't even work. The place itself it's nice but nothing special.

Visited the floating market, but it was quite disappointing. Most shops were empty or had very few items, nothing special to buy. Pros: The market is located by a lake, so there is some scenic value. Cons / Tips: Water in the lake has a strong, unpleasant smell. Many shops are empty or poorly stocked, and some have a weird odor. Not much to buy or explore; not ideal for shopping. Tip: Visit only if you want to see the lake or take photos; don’t expect a good shopping experience."

Floating market is all hype. There is nothing necessary you have to buy or will catch your interest. I don't know why everyone suggests it. But trust me its nothing like a local market. But the place itself is quite beautiful. You can see in the pictures. There is a small lake with green water. And beautifully organized shops inside the market. Its a good place to hangout or goofing around with friends.

The Floating Market in Pettah is an interesting concept that brings a touch of calm to the usually busy heart of Colombo. Built along Beira Lake, the market is designed with wooden walkways and floating platforms that host shops and stalls. You can find a mix of items here—from clothing and electronics to handicrafts, souvenirs, and local snacks. The lakeside setting gives it a more relaxed atmosphere compared to the bustling Pettah streets just outside. That said, the market doesn’t always feel as lively as one might expect. Many stalls remain closed or sparsely stocked, which can make the space seem quieter than a typical Sri Lankan market. Some of the charm is also offset by occasional issues with water quality in the lake, which may affect the overall experience. Despite that, the Floating Market is still worth visiting if you enjoy photography, a peaceful stroll, or simply want to experience something different in Colombo. The best time to go is late afternoon or early evening, when the sun is setting and the atmosphere becomes more pleasant. While it may not be as bustling as other markets, the Floating Market offers a unique perspective of the city and a nice place to pause during your visit to Pettah.

I recently visited the Pettah Floating Market for a night outing and was captivated by the beautiful sight. Although the market was closed, I enjoyed a leisurely walk amidst the enchanting night lights. The illuminated surroundings created a magical atmosphere, with vibrant reflections on the calm waters. It was a serene and delightful experience. Please be aware of your surroundings, particularly at night. Enjoy the captivating ambiance and take in the stunning views.

Nothing much to see here. Most of the shops are closed. There is a big restaurant/cafe area at one end serving food and juices. We had a good mango juice there for ~200 LKR

The floating market must have been a sight back in the day. Unfortunately, it's now mostly decrepit, with shops no longer in business. This place is dead. Don't expect to shop or purchase anything here. All you can do is stroll around and sit on some of the benches. The water itself is extremely polluted. A local told me that the market was recently sold to a private group, and they're planning to restore it. Let's hope that goes well. The concept is great, but there's nothing there for now.

We came in the morning. I imagine this was nice place when originally opened but the COVID and crisis seem to have driven lots of shops out of business, water is not clean and a bit stinky. Didn't find any souvenirs, but we found one nice cafe and watched different birds on the lake.
