Holy Trinity Cathedral is definitely worth visiting, but I strongly recommend going with a guide who can explain Ethiopian Orthodox customs, symbolism, music and their elements. What was interesting for me was the older church Be’ale Wold Church beside it, built in 1887 in a more traditional Ethiopian Orthodox style. A big contrast between the European-influenced cathedral and the traditional one. Be'ale Wold has circular form, very vivid colours and painted walls feel warmer and much more rooted in the country’s visual culture. Do not miss it. Church is however not always open but walking around it is worth it. The museum i wouldnt recommend it. Small, very disappointing and in a relaly bad conditions. Not presented in a way that does justice to its collection.

Holy Trinity Cathedral has beautiful architecture and is an important historical and religious site. The structure itself is impressive and worth seeing. However, the entry system is very disappointing. Charging a high fee to enter a church—even for prayer—is hard to accept. It feels unreasonable for a place of worship. On top of that, the ticket collection is poorly managed, with no proper office or organized system, which makes the whole experience frustrating. While the cathedral is undoubtedly beautiful, this kind of setup takes away from its spiritual value. The authorities seriously need to rethink this approach, as it leaves a negative impression on visitors.

Beautiful cathedral. I see previous reviews stating they paid. I went multiple times and didn’t pay at all. I suggest visiting, it’s a spiritual experience. Also to the tourists who said the people were rude, there’s a cultural difference and I seen tourist walking in there as if they have some sort of right to carry on without considering Ethiopians have their own ways of worship.

Overhyped and overpriced (at Birr 1500). The Church has without doubt historic significance but some of the reviews here seem to be sponsored to exaggerate its unique beauty. I agree with a previous review that it would hardly be outstanding if it was in Europe. It didn't appear well kept during our visit (September 2025) and there are lots of touts around harassing visitors for payments (even when taking photos from the outside). All this did not allow for a peaceful and relaxed visit, not even to pray and contemplate. I certainly wouldn't mind a small donation after visiting such place to support its upkeep (as I believe many other visitors would do), but this experience drove us away.

Beautiful and historic cathedral with incredible artwork and deep cultural significance. The museum on-site is small but filled with fascinating imperial artifacts. Definitely worth a stop to see the resting place of Haile Selassie and enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the grounds.

Holy Trinity Cathedral is a stunning symbol of Ethiopian faith and history. Its grand architecture, beautiful stained glass, and historic tombs create a peaceful atmosphere. A must-visit site to understand Addis Ababa’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

The place felt good and had good energy, the price is a bit expensive 1500 birr but worth it considering the last emperor of Ethiopia is buried there, all in all it's a must if in Ethiopia. The church offers a bit of history in the paintings and murals

Trinity Cathedral’s Stunning Renewal The newly renewed Trinity Cathedral is nothing short of breathtaking. Blending historic reverence with modern elegance, the restoration has elevated this iconic landmark into a space that feels both timeless and refreshed. The interior now glows with renewed light—every stained-glass window seems more vibrant, the vaulted ceilings more majestic, and the acoustics have been subtly enhanced to create an atmosphere that’s both serene and powerful. Whether you’re attending a service, a concert, or simply exploring, the space now invites deeper reflection and awe. Architecturally, the renovations have respected the cathedral’s original Gothic beauty while carefully incorporating contemporary touches that make it feel more accessible and welcoming. The lighting, seating, and layout all reflect thoughtful attention to comfort and inclusivity, without compromising the spiritual grandeur. The Trinity Cathedral has long been a cornerstone of the community, but this renewal feels like a bold new chapter—one that honors its sacred past while embracing the future with open arms. Simply put, it’s amazing.

Holy Trinity Cathedral is close to Addis Ababa city center. It’s a beautiful church but too pricey to visit. Visit to a little museum next door is included. The entrance fee for the foreigners was around 1500 birrs, which is too much for what offers. On the bright side, the guide inside the church and the stuff in the museum was super friendly.

⭐ Attempted to visit Holy Trinity Cathedral during our time in Addis Ababa but ultimately chose not to enter. While I understand and fully accept that tourist entry fees are often higher than those for locals, the amount being charged felt excessive — particularly for a place of worship. The fee was higher than what we paid for dinner for two on multiple evenings at a well-established five-star hotel in the city. Places of worship, especially historic churches, are of course free to charge admission for maintenance and preservation. That is entirely reasonable. However, the pricing here felt disproportionate and, in my view, at odds with the welcoming spirit one expects from a church. When I queried the fee, the response was dismissive, which reinforced the sense that the pricing structure prioritises revenue over hospitality. Addis Ababa is a destination with enormous cultural and historical depth, and visitors are generally keen to support heritage sites. A more transparent and proportionate approach to entry fees would likely encourage goodwill rather than resistance. Unfortunately, on this occasion, we decided not to proceed with the visit

The Holy Trinity Cathedral is a striking example of Orthodox Christianity, which evolved from the traditions of the Byzantine Empire. This branch of Eastern Christianity places great emphasis on preserving correct teachings and praise, and on maintaining liturgies and practices that have been carefully codified over the centuries. Core doctrines such as the Trinity, the use of icons, and the dual nature of Christ were defined by the decisions of the seven ecumenical councils held between the fourth and eighth centuries. Ultimately, these distinctions led to the split with the Roman Catholic Church in 1054, creating the separate Orthodox tradition. Upon entering the cathedral, visitors immediately notice the significance of the icons, which are treated with the same reverence as sacred scripture. Their strict artistic style is not merely decorative, but serves as a visual theology that guides worshippers through prayer and reflection. The liturgical calendar revolves around the eight-week cycle leading up to and following Easter, with periods of fasting that influence both spiritual and daily life. This structure provides a rhythm that intertwines devotion, community participation and personal reflection, providing a sense of continuity with centuries of practice. What strikes me is the cohesion of the rituals and the physical space. Everything, from the chanting to the visual focus of the icons, reinforces the theological and historical foundations of Orthodoxy. Even visitors who are unfamiliar with the details can sense the discipline and reverence, which creates a contemplative atmosphere that invites attention and reflection. Compared to other religious traditions, the Orthodox Church maintains a distinct approach that feels both timeless and deeply rooted in cultural history. The cathedral also reflects a broader pattern of spiritual and cultural development. Its adherence to long-standing customs contrasts with the more simplified or reformist movements seen in other religions, such as some interpretations of Islam.

Neat little museum onsite but the cathedral was closed for renovations. It was raining so there was mud everywhere. Its somewhat ramshackle restoration seems to be progressing okay but this place should be better organized. I found the guide experience confusing and not seeing the inside of the cathedral was definitely a letdown. 300 birr entrance fee plus a tip for the guide

When I tried to take a photo of the exterior from outside the premises, the gatekeeper told me to buy a ticket. 800 Birr is too expensive, considering that you can't see inside because it's under construction. The museum is just a dusty storeroom. A man claiming to be a facility attendant in the ticket booth started to show me around, and despite me repeatedly telling him that I didn't have the money to pay him, he didn't leave my side and kept explaining. In the end, he asked me for $20 because he had given me a special tour inside and needed to pay the construction boss, and charged him separately for the guide fee. When I told him that I didn't have the money and that I told him from the beginning that I wouldn't pay him, he told me that there was an ATM. The attendant and the construction workers are all in on it. Be careful.

It doesn't make sense to pay to attend prayers as a foreigner, and many local guides in front of the church are trying to get money from you in any way, and they stopped me from entering to attend mas because I was colored (white) even when I was with my friends.

Every other European village has a church like this. Watch out if you approaching thru the main entrance because they will surely try to scam you! There are free passages from the sides without the hyenas. The graveyard was more interesting here than anything else to me. Crazy sculptures.
