Chandratal Lake (literally translating to the "Lake of the Moon") is one of the most stunning high-altitude alpine lakes in India. Located in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, it sits at an elevation of approximately 4,250 meters (13,940 feet) above sea level. The lake gets its name from its distinct crescent shape, nestled on the Samudra Tapu plateau, which overlooks the Chandra River. Key Highlights & Geography The Changing Colors: The lake is famous for its crystal-clear, calm waters that change colors throughout the day—shifting from a deep sapphire blue in the morning to a brilliant turquoise or emerald green as the sun moves across the sky. Ecological Significance: Chandratal is a designated Ramsar wetland site, recognizing its international importance for biodiversity. It acts as a critical refuge for various migratory bird species during the summer months. Trekking & Trails: The lake is surrounded by vast, rolling alpine meadows (called samudri) which bloom with wildflowers in late summer. It serves as a major campsite and is a key destination on the popular trek across the Kunzum Pass, or the longer trek from Batal. It can be reached from the Manali side via the Atal Tunnel, Koksar, and Batal, or from the Spiti side via Kaza and Kunzum Pass. A narrow, rugged 14 km unpaved road branches off from Batal towards the lake. Vehicles stop at a designated parking lot about 1 to 1.5 kilometers away from the water, requiring a short, scenic walk to reach the banks. To protect the delicate local ecology, camping directly next to the water is strictly prohibited. An organized campsite zone with luxury and budget tents is located roughly 2 to 3 kilometers down the road from the lake parking area.

Absolutely stunning! Chandratal’s turquoise waters, scenic mountain views, and serene environment make it a magical destination. A truly unforgettable experience.” You can compare Chandratal with Gurudomar lake in Sikkim. Both are good.

Our Chandratal trip was one of the most challenging yet unforgettable journeys I've ever experienced. If you're expecting luxury, this isn't the place—but if you're looking for adventure, breathtaking landscapes, and memories that will stay with you forever, Chandratal is absolutely worth it. The journey itself was a real test. The roads were rough, narrow, and filled with rocks, making the drive both tiring and thrilling. There were moments when we wondered if we'd even make it, but every bit of the struggle made reaching Chandratal even more rewarding. We stayed overnight in camps near the lake, and that experience was something truly special. As night fell, the temperature dropped below -10°C, and the freezing cold was unlike anything I had ever experienced. Despite the harsh weather, sitting around, enjoying a simple plate of hot rajma chawal, felt like the best meal in the world. Sometimes it's the simplest things that become the most memorable when you're surrounded by nature. The silence of the mountains, the clear night sky filled with countless stars, and the crisp mountain air created an atmosphere that can't be described in words. Waking up the next morning to the stunning turquoise waters of Chandratal, with snow-capped peaks reflecting in the lake, made us forget every hardship of the journey. This trip taught me that the best destinations often require the toughest journeys. The difficult roads, the freezing temperatures, and the basic camping conditions only made the experience more authentic and unforgettable. A huge thanks to everyone who made this trip possible. If you're an adventure lover and don't mind a little discomfort for an extraordinary experience, I highly recommend visiting Chandratal at least once in your lifetime. It's not just a trip—it's an adventure you'll never forget.

Chandratal Lake offers some of the most breathtaking views in the region. The entry fee is ₹150 per person (payable from the campsite side). The lake is about 4 km from the camps, and shared taxis charge around ₹200 per person for a one-way ride. From the parking area, you’ll need to trek approximately 1 km to reach the lake.

A lifetime experience. People have to walk about 1 to 2 km from the parking ground to the main Lake . Those who are weak should carry necessary precautions as the oxygen level is really low here. We relied upon Coca 30, and successfully had the trek. Per head ticket is Rs 150

Chandra tal Not worth suffering. Much hype created. No network in spiti valley except some villages and cities on the way. No milestones or sign boards on the way. While coming from Shimla side, road is good till Kalpa and ok till Tabo. After that roads are very bad. Kaza city is full of dust. We spent most of the time driving on dirt, dust or stones. Moreover there is no regulation on the traffic resulting in jam on narrow paches near Chandra tal. We had to leave our vehicle and cross the water stream to get another 4x4 vehicle. Return journey was very horrible till few kilometres before Sissu as there were no roads and many water stream created small water ponds on the way and crossing them was very risky. We started from Kaza in the morning 5 am and reached Sissu at 6 pm after visiting Chandra tal. Our bodies were extremely tired and shaken by lurching motion due to driving without roads. There are many others lakes which are more beautiful and reachable.

Chandra Taal, famously known as the "Lake of the Moon," is a breathtaking high-altitude lake nestled at an elevation of approximately 4,300 meters (14,100 feet) in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. Named for its distinct crescent shape, this crystalline body of water is situated on the Samudra Tapu plateau and serves as the primary source of the Chandra River. The lake is renowned for its mesmerizing ability to change hues throughout the day—shifting from a deep turquoise to an emerald green and even a reddish-orange as the sunlight shifts. Beyond its natural beauty, Chandra Taal holds deep spiritual significance; Hindu mythology identifies it as the sacred spot where Lord Indra’s chariot descended to take Yudhishthira, the eldest Pandava, to heaven. It’s really beautiful. Oxygen level is poor. So, be careful about this.

An Essential Guide to Visiting Chandratal Lake in Spiti Valley ...Chandratal, the "Moon Lake" in Spiti Valley, is a high-altitude, crescent-shaped glacial lake reflecting Himalayan peaks, known for its otherworldly beauty, spiritual lore (like Lord Indra's connection), and serene, raw landscape that shifts from turquoise to deep blue, offering a magical, quiet escape for trekkers amidst barren mountains and wildflowers.

Chandratal Lake in Spiti is one of the most breathtaking places I’ve ever visited 🏔️✨ The crystal-clear water surrounded by mountains feels almost unreal. The journey to reach there is a bit challenging, but totally worth it for the views and peaceful vibe. Sitting by the lake under the open sky, especially at sunset or night, is an unforgettable experience.

Chandratal is pure adventure. At this high altitude, the road winds across barren plateau landscapes with peaks still wrapped in snow. The lake itself, shaped like a crescent, feels no less than heaven. Nights get freezing, so keep warm clothes handy — the temperature drops fast. Standing there, you feel as if a divine chariot once passed through these valleys.
