Ruwanweli Maha Seya

Visiting Ruwanweli Maha Seya was a deeply spiritual experience for us. We were fortunate enough to participate in worship and offer Kiripindu Pooja (කිරිපිඬු පූජාව) at this sacred site. Standing before the Great Stupa, which was built by King Dutugemunu, you feel an incredible sense of peace and history. The sight of the pure white dome against the blue sky is breathtaking. Offering the milk rice in such a historic and holy place is a memory we will cherish forever. For anyone visiting, I highly recommend arriving early in the morning for the pooja. The atmosphere is calm, the air is filled with the scent of incense, and the spirit of devotion is truly moving. A must-visit for both spiritual reflection and to witness the architectural grandeur of ancient Sri Lanka.

According to history, the stupa enshrines the largest collection of sacred relics brought from Kapilavastu, in present-day Nepal. It is also the largest stupa in Sri Lanka, making it both spiritually and historically significant. Visitors are kindly encouraged not to bring plastic items or pollute the surroundings. The police and the community make a genuine effort to keep the area clean and pleasant so that every pilgrim can enjoy the environment and observe their religious practices in peace. When offering flowers, please avoid pushing or rushing others. There are many flower offering tables around the stupa, so everyone has ample space to make their offerings respectfully.

Beautiful and Peaceful Place I visited the Ruwanweli Saya Stupa and had a wonderful experience. It’s best to visit early in the morning between 6:00–10:00 a.m. — later it gets very hot and hard to walk around. The evening time is also nice. There is a car park available, and the area is very clean and well-maintained. The place feels very secure. Clean washroom facilities are available, which is great. Make sure to bring your own food, as there are no food shops nearby. Overall, a peaceful and spiritual place worth visiting!

The stupa is massive (Largest in Sri Lanka) and beautifully maintained, especially when it’s lit up at night — absolutely stunning! The atmosphere is so peaceful, filled with the sound of prayers and the smell of incense. You can really feel the sacred energy here. It’s a must-visit spot in Anuradhapura, whether you’re here for the history, architecture, or spiritual experience. We visited Ruwanweli Maha Seya both daytime and night.I could have stayed for hours just taking it all in. 🙏✨
