Wadi Shab, located near Tiwi on the Muscat–Sur coastal road (Route 17), is one of Oman’s most famous wadi hikes. The trail combines an easy canyon walk with a unique adventure: swimming through emerald pools to reach a hidden cave waterfall deep inside the narrow wadi. The trailhead is approximately 156 km from Al Khuwair in Muscat and 47 km from Sur. 📍 Trailhead: R6QW+MC, Tiwi Parking is available near the trail entrance. To begin the hike, visitors must cross the wadi by taking a short boat ride (less than 50 meters) operated by local boatmen. The RO 1 round-trip fare helps support the local community and is the recommended way to cross the water rather than attempting to walk around. Preparation Tips: • Rent life jackets and waterproof bags near the trailhead if you plan to swim. • Water shoes are strongly recommended due to slippery rocks. • Carry drinking water and snacks, as there are no facilities along the trail itself. • Keep valuables sealed in waterproof bags before entering the swimming section. Typical Experience 1. Boat crossing to enter the wadi 2. Scenic canyon walk (~4 km) 3. Swimming through deep pools 4. Passing through a narrow cave opening 5. Reaching the hidden waterfall pool The Walk The first section of the hike follows an easy and well-defined path along the wadi, passing through narrow canyon walls and occasional small farming plots that add charm to the landscape. Most of this section is flat with minimal elevation gain, and several portions of the path include concrete walkways and stone paths. Navigation is straightforward because the canyon walls naturally guide the route. Blue arrows mark the trail in several places. Because the wadi is flanked by very high canyon walls, GPS signals and tracking data may occasionally be weak or unavailable along parts of the route. After approximately 4 km, the walking trail ends and the adventure changes character. The Pools & Swimming Section Beyond the walking trail, visitors must wade and swim through a series of emerald pools. Some sections can be walked through if water levels are low, but several areas are suddenly deep and require swimming. The swimming section continues through the canyon and leads to a narrow cave-like opening with limited headroom. Passing through this opening reveals one of the highlights of the hike — a beautiful hidden pool fed by a small waterfall. This pool is quite deep and has no footing, so strong swimming ability or the use of life vests is strongly recommended. Although experienced swimmers may manage without flotation, the water is much less buoyant than sea water, and the depth of the pools can be deceptive. Life jackets, waterproof bags, and phone covers are available for rent or purchase near the trailhead. The rocks in the pools are extremely slippery, so caution is advised when entering or exiting the water. Flash Flood Warning Like many wadis in Oman, Wadi Shab is vulnerable to flash floods during heavy rain. Some sections of the canyon have sheer vertical walls, leaving little opportunity to escape rising water. These areas can become extremely dangerous if flooding occurs. Visitors should never enter the wadi if rain is forecast in the mountains upstream. Trail Conditions & Difficulty • Difficulty: Moderate (due to swimming section) • Terrain: Wadi floor, canyon path, swimming pools • Surface: Gravel, rock paths, concrete walkways • Scrambling: Minimal • Exposure: None on walking trail • Navigation: Easy; canyon walls guide the route • Shade: Large sections shaded by canyon walls • Best season: October – April • Suitable for: Hikers comfortable with swimming • Not recommended for: Non-swimmers without flotation devices Facilities • Parking near trailhead • Boat crossing service • Rental shops for life jackets and waterproof bags • Small shops near parking area • Possible restroom facilities near parking area

A nice 1h30 walk (45 min one-way) with a refreshing swim halfway. I recommend bringing water shoes if you plan to go up stream all the way to the waterfall because you will have to wade over 100m of sharp pebbles half way through the swim.

If you're looking for an unforgettable adventure in Oman, look no further than Wadi Shab’s Second Pool. It’s not just a picturesque spot, but a true treasure nestled deep in the mountains. Here’s why it’s an absolute must-see and what you need to know for the perfect experience......... Go early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds and capture the most magical lighting for photos.ring water shoes, a waterproof bag for your belongings, and a good camera. Don’t forget sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself from the sun during the hike, Swimwear is a must, but also consider bringing a light cover-up for after your swim. You’ll be walking through some rocky areas, so comfortable clothing is key, Keep an eye on the water levels and be cautious of slippery rocks, especially near the pool’s edge. Always swim with a buddy for safety. Wadi Shab’s Second Pool offers one of the most scenic and peaceful swimming experiences you’ll ever have. The beauty of the place, combined with a fun hike and clear waters, makes it the perfect spot for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Whether you’re exploring with family, friends, or on your own, it’s an experience that you’ll remember forever. Highly recommend!

After a 45-60 mins walk from the start of the wadi/boat drop, this is your cooling reward. Enjoy a swim in the water. Beware that rocks around the water entry are slippery, even under water. The water continues for 100-150 mtrs where you come to the cave with the waterfall. Around the edges you can stand in the water but it gets deep pretty quickly. No services here.

Another beautiful wadi of Oman, although this place can get really crowded as it is very famous and not too far from Muscat, it is still really nice and stunning place to see.
