“Were one to seek within the frontiers of Persia an institution wherein the annals of the Earth are not merely preserved but expounded with a zeal both scholarly and national, one could scarcely do better than direct one’s steps to the Geological Survey and Mineral Exploration of Iran, established, as it was, in the mid-years of the last century, and thenceforth serving as sentinel and custodian of that most august discipline, geology. It is in no small measure owing to the indefatigable labours of its distinguished personages — Dr. Aghanabati, whose magisterial volumes upon the stratigraphy of Iran have become, as it were, canonical texts; Dr. Lotfi, whose incursions into the mysteries of structural geology and geophysics did illuminate what had long lain obscure; the lamented Dr. Fereydoun Rezaei, remembered with reverence for a scrupulosity bordering upon the ascetic; Dr. Ghorashi, indefatigable pedagogue and architect of scholarly generations; and Dr. Farhad Gharib, whose sagacity in the twin realms of science and administration did elevate the Survey’s renown to international regard — that this establishment enjoys an eminence not easily gainsaid. But if the Survey’s offices resound with the industry of its scholars, it is within the precincts of its Geological Museum that the general visitor encounters that rare union of erudition and wonder. Here, arrayed in solemn cabinets, repose the coiled ammonites, spectral echoes of vanished seas; the venerable trilobites and fragile brachiopods, mute heralds of Paleozoic tides; the delicate imprints of prehistoric flora, which whisper of luxuriant forests long since withered into stone; the ponderous footprints of dinosaurs, impressed upon the primeval earth as if to remind us that sovereignty upon the land is ever transient; and the ancient stromatolites, those lithic palimpsests wrought by microbes at the very dawn of life, which stand as testimony to nature’s antiquity more enduring than any human chronicle. Conveniently ensconced within Tehran, accessible by the principal thoroughfares and conveyances of the metropolis, the Survey affords not only galleries for contemplation and laboratories for inquiry but also, by provision of its refectory, sustenance to the body even as the mind is nourished. Thus, to visit this Survey is not merely to peruse a collection or to frequent a museum, but to traverse, in the company of illustrious forebears, the immeasurable vistas of geological time; and in so doing to apprehend, however dimly, the majesty of a science that renders the Earth itself both subject and text. To the scholar, the traveller, the student, and the casual inquirer “It is both a privilege and a duty, when speaking of the Geological Survey of Iran, to inscribe first and foremost the name of Dr. Seyed Ali Aghanabati, whose scholarship has, in the judgement of many, raised the study of Iran’s stratigraphy from the realm of local enquiry to that of universal science. His masterwork — the comprehensive volume on the stratigraphy of Iran — stands not merely as a compilation of data, but as a veritable monument of intellectual endurance, wherein each stratum of the land is rendered with such lucidity and order that the very rocks seem to disclose their secrets willingly beneath his pen. The Zagros ranges, the Alborz heights, the central plateau — all emerge in his pages as chapters in a grand terrestrial epic, read and interpreted for the first time with a coherence that only his acumen could bestow.
