Ez-Zitouna Mosque is one of the most important historical and religious landmarks in Tunisia. You reach it by walking through the narrow streets and small shops of the Medina, which is an enjoyable experience in itself. The first thing we noticed after entering was how peaceful and cool it felt inside. After the busy streets outside, the calm atmosphere was especially refreshing. Whether you’re visiting for prayer or simply to appreciate its history and architecture, it’s definitely worth stopping by. At the entrance, one of the staff members politely asked which country we were visiting from. If you’re exploring the Medina, I highly recommend taking some time to visit this beautiful mosque.

Visiting Zitouna Mosque was a truly beautiful and peaceful experience. The architecture is stunning, rich in history, and reflects the deep cultural and spiritual heritage of Tunisia. The atmosphere was calm and welcoming, and walking through the mosque and its surrounding old medina was unforgettable. A must-visit place in Tunis.

Loved this masjid, and loved staying closeby. This is the second oldest masjid in Africa and it shows. The architecture and design is beautiful, and the people are extremely kind and friendly. I would recommend staying as close to this masjid as possible when you visit Tunis! For anyone from the Western world, be aware of a few things: - The wudu area for men is in the main courtyard and is basically an open faucet. This definitely feels uncomfortable but is completely normal. There’s a basket of slippers nearby for public use to walk between this area and the musallah. - The wudu areas for women and general bathrooms are down the street. It’s not the cleanest, so I’d recommend using the bathroom and/or doing the wudu before you come to the masjid. - The dress code for women entering the musallah is a little more strict than you’d expect. Definitely recommend bringing an abayah, as they don’t typically allow people to wear pants in the women’s section.

La historia de la Mezquita Zitouna se remonta al año 698 d.C., cuando fue fundada por el gobernador árabe Hassan ibn al-Nu'man tras la conquista islámica del norte de África. Sin embargo, fue el califa aglabí Ibrahim ibn al-Aghlab quien ordenó su reconstrucción y ampliación definitiva en el año 864 d.C., dotándola de la estructura que en gran parte podemos admirar hoy en día. El nombre "Zitouna" significa oliva en árabe "aceituna", y según la tradición, hace referencia a un olivo bajo cuya sombra el sabio Okba ibn Nafaa habría impartido las primeras enseñanzas islámicas en la región. Esta leyenda convierte al árbol en símbolo de sabiduría y conocimiento, valores que la mezquita abrazaría con fuerza a lo largo de los siglos. Durante siglos, la Zitouna no fue únicamente un centro espiritual, sino también una de las universidades islámicas más antiguas e influyentes del mundo. Su biblioteca y sus escuelas formaron a generaciones de teólogos, juristas, filósofos y poetas que irradiaron su conocimiento por todo el Mediterráneo. Grandes pensadores como Ibn Jaldún, el célebre historiador y padre de la sociología moderna, estuvieron vinculados a este enclave cultural. La universidad de la Zitouna funcionó de manera continua hasta el siglo XX, cuando fue integrada en la Universidad de Túnez en 1956, tras la independencia del país. A lo largo de su historia, la mezquita sobrevivió conquistas, dinastías y transformaciones políticas, pasando por manos de aglabíes, fatimíes, ziríes, hafsíes, otomanos y colonizadores franceses, sin perder nunca su esencia ni su relevancia espiritual.

La nostra visita è stata piuttosto veloce perché era il giorno della preghiera, ma nonostante questo ci hanno comunque permesso di accedere, cosa che abbiamo davvero apprezzato. La moschea è bellissima: affascinante, ricca di storia e con un’atmosfera unica che si percepisce appena si entra nel cortile. Una tappa assolutamente da vedere per comprendere l’anima autentica di Tunisi.

Pour visiter, magnifique endroit, attention pour les femmes il faut être couvertes (jambes, bras, tête), ils prêtent des foulards et jupes contre quelques pièces pour l'entretien de la Mosquée. L'endroit est vraiment beau. Les visiteurs peuvent voir la cour et apercevoir les salles de prière en s'arrêtant aux portes pour respecter le culte.

La Mosquée Zitouna, située au cœur de la médina de Tunis, est un lieu absolument incontournable. C’est l’un des joyaux du patrimoine tunisien, à la fois spirituel et architectural. Son architecture est impressionnante, avec ses arcades, ses colonnes anciennes et son atmosphère paisible qui contraste avec l’agitation des souks autour. Même si l’accès à l’intérieur est souvent réservé aux musulmans, on peut admirer une grande partie de la mosquée depuis les terrasses voisines ou en se promenant autour. Le seul point faible, c’est le manque d’indications touristiques et d’entretien dans les ruelles avoisinantes. The spiritual feelings that fills your body and soul once entering this Mosque can't be described,1327 years ago this Mosque was built exactly at the year 79 AH. The historic part is clearly seen, the touches of Arabic culture is evident everywhere. Clean, no waiting, welcoming, must be wearing the proper and covering clothes that respect the Islamic rules.

Visitare la Moschea Zitouna è stata una delle esperienze più suggestive e significative della mia permanenza a Tunisi. Situata nel pieno centro della medina, tra vicoli stretti, mercati vibranti e profumi speziati, questa moschea rappresenta non solo un luogo di culto, ma il vero simbolo spirituale, culturale e storico della città. Appena ci si avvicina, si percepisce subito il peso dei secoli: la moschea è un punto di riferimento per Tunisi sin dall’VIII secolo, una delle più antiche del Maghreb. La sua architettura affascina immediatamente: colonne romane e bizantine riutilizzate, arcate eleganti, cortili luminosi e un’atmosfera sospesa nel tempo. Ogni dettaglio racconta una storia, ogni pietra sembra portare il segno delle civiltà che si sono succedute in Tunisia. Una cosa che colpisce profondamente è il silenzio del cortile interno: appena varcato l’ingresso, si passa dal caos colorato della medina a un luogo di quiete assoluta. È uno di quei posti in cui ti viene spontaneo rallentare, respirare e osservare. Anche per chi non è praticante, l’ambiente trasmette una forte sensazione di pace e rispetto. Il personale e i custodi sono molto gentili, pronti a spiegare la storia del luogo o a indicare i punti di accesso per i visitatori. Alcune aree interne sono riservate ai fedeli musulmani, ma anche visitare il cortile e osservare gli interni dalle arcate è un’esperienza che merita assolutamente. La moschea non è solo un edificio: è stata uno dei più importanti centri dell’educazione islamica di tutto il Nord Africa. Per secoli, studiosi e studenti sono passati di qui per formarsi in teologia, diritto e scienze, rendendola una vera e propria università del mondo arabo. Dal punto di vista fotografico, è uno dei luoghi più belli della medina: la luce taglia gli archi in modo perfetto, il bianco delle pietre contrasta con il cielo azzurro e le geometrie creano composizioni meravigliose. È impossibile non restare affascinati. Consiglio di visitarla al mattino, quando la medina è meno affollata e si può godere appieno della calma del cortile e della bellezza dell’architettura. Inoltre, i negozi circostanti offrono una cornice perfetta per continuare l’esplorazione tra botteghe tradizionali, artigianato e spezie. In conclusione, la Moschea Zitouna è un luogo imprescindibile per chi visita Tunisi: non è solo una tappa turistica, ma un tassello fondamentale per comprendere l’anima della città e la sua storia millenaria. I visited Al-Zitouna Mosque in downtown Tunis and it was truly an amazing experience. The mosque beautifully combines deep spirituality with rich history, featuring stunning Andalusian–Arab architecture that immediately catches the eye. The courtyard is spacious and peaceful, creating a calming atmosphere. People there are welcoming, the place is clean and well-organized, and its location in the old Medina adds an authentic cultural touch. ❤️ I highly recommend visiting it to anyone interested in Islamic architecture, history, or simply looking for a serene and meaningful place to explore.🤍
