So, I finally got around to trying Zuma at Al Maha Island after hearing a lot of hype. It’s one of those places that seems to promise a high-end dining experience with a lively atmosphere. Unfortunately, for me, the whole experience was just… okay.
Let’s start with the sushi — it was fine. Not bad, but definitely not great either. For a restaurant with Zuma’s reputation and price point, I expected something a bit more memorable. The flavors were kind of flat, and nothing really stood out. It didn’t feel like a place that was putting much creativity or freshness into what they were serving that day.
The service was also just okay. The staff weren’t rude, but they weren’t particularly friendly or attentive either. We had to wait longer than expected to get someone’s attention a few times, and it felt like we were just another table they had to get through. Not the kind of vibe you want when you're out for a nice dinner.
Now, the space itself is modern and stylish, which I appreciated — but the tables are super close together. Like, awkwardly close. If you're planning on having a relaxed conversation or catching up with someone, forget it. You can hear every word from the tables around you, and they can hear you too. It felt more like a crowded lounge than a restaurant.
One weird thing I didn’t expect: they don’t allow hats. I showed up wearing a clean, casual cap and was politely asked to take it off. I get it if that’s their policy, but it felt a bit unnecessary given the overall casual feel of the place — especially considering how trendy and relaxed the crowd looked.
On the plus side, the manager was actually decent. He came by to check in and was polite and professional. He seemed open to feedback, which I appreciated. That definitely helped soften the overall impression.
All in all, Zuma at Al Maha Island was a decent night out, but nothing that left me excited to return. With so many great dining options around, I’d probably try somewhere else next time.
